Exclamation Idol, minus Simon Cowell? No BS!

Just read this shocker on CNN:

"Simon Cowell considers leaving 'Idol'
April 15, 2009, 10:29 AM EST

For the better part of a decade, audiences have equated the brutal honesty component of "American Idol" with Simon Cowell. But with only one year left in his contract, the longtime host says it may be time to put an end to his work with the American show.

"Most people do one show a year and I do three and they involve a lot of traveling," Cowell told the Mirror on April 11. "One may have to go. I don't know which one. That is the problem, I like all of them.

"I can't imagine not doing my country's shows 'Britain's Got Talent' and I can't imagine not doing 'X Factor.' But I guess America is more likely to go because I have only got one more year under contract. Maybe that will be the end."

He went on to explain how taking as many as four transatlantic flights a week for his role as judge on "Idol," "X Factor," and "Britain's Got Talent" has started to tax his energy and social life. He said he has not had time for dating, although there have been offers, since he split with Terri Seymour.

In addition, he told the British paper he plans to launch a new show next year.

Though he did not elaborate, reports have surfaced that Cowell has two projects in development, "a comedy centered on an aspiring singer who becomes a reality-show sensation," and "a behind-the-scenes look at the 10 contestants vying to be the winner of a singing competition TV show."

"There is a point where I am not sure we can keep this schedule up," he said. "It takes longer and longer to make these shows because you have to put more into them, and I am not sure we can sustain me doing three shows a year, with the record label and the TV production company."

So, what do you guys think about this possible development? Simon seems insistent that he will NOT stop doing "his country's shows," and that means that AI would be the one to go, after his contract is up.

I, for one, don't think AI will have nearly as much 'oomph' without Simon; whether you like him or not, he's a HUGE player in the show's success and oft cult-like following. I don't know if I'd even want to watch it without Simon??? What is American Idol without Simon? Heck, Simon MADE Idol!!!

Weigh in on this one, guys!

If you think the show sucks now, just wait until Simon leaves.

It's like taking a cane away from a one-legged man... he'll hop along for a while, but he'll eventually fall down - HARD.

(No offense to the one-legged men out there... )

He's got other shows, and he's rich as hell.

He can afford to leave.

I wasn't referring to Simon, I was talking about Idol. I don't know how long it would last without Simon...

He makes the show.

His critique, is really the only one, the contestants, and the audience, are interested in.

I guess I'm in he minority here, but I think the show would be a lot BETTER without Simon.

In our group (remember this is 50-60 people in a bar), people watch Idol for the music. The judges are just an annoyance that we put up with by ordering another beer or making a quick trip to the facilities. Honestly, we don't even listen to them. I don't think any of the judges add anything at all positive to the show. I think their main purpose is to convince voters to vote for certain contestants and not others.
