Was it just me or
Was Phil off-key last night? The duet with Joshua was painful, but the 'judges' just heaped praise on both of them. Phil struggled with the high notes on his second song, but again, lots of accolades.
Was I watching a different show?

No sir, you were not. Even Philip was cringing during those falsetto notes, X1.
I would have bet good money that Randy would have thrown in "pitchy" in his comments, but not a one. Very strange.
Joshua is good, but now every song of his winds up being a screamapalooza and body convulsions.
Hollie, Jessica and Skylar have the goods.

I thought Hollie had a solid night. Not sure it's enough given she's been living in the bottom 3 for almost the entire contest. Then again, didn't Haley from last season? And she made the top 3. So who knows. Her rendition of "Bleeding Love" was quite impressive.
I've always thought Skylar was the best all-around performer of the group. Her first song was good, but not one of her best. Second song was pretty darn good. Always like that Dusty Springfield tune. Not sure how well a song like that would work for her on a recording though. The sharp nasally country twang just seems a bit out of place compared to the nice rounded tones when Dusty sang it. But it was a decent interpretation.
Jessica again, is solid vocally. She did seem a bit out of breath trying to do the whole Tina Turner bit. It did seem a little forced, but still solid vocally. Her second song was pure awesomeness.
Agree that Joshua seems to scream in most of his songs. But when he just sings, he's pretty good. Not sure the 1st song worked too well for me. That jacket just seemed to scream "Love Boat" way too much and gave it a bit of a lounge flavor. In this competition, you DON'T want to be tagged as lounge singer material.
P2 almost seems like he wants to exit. Perhaps he does. He seems to be more the 'indie' type and likely would get mishandled if he were tied to the AI contract. They'd want to push him toward more mainstream pop, and it wouldn't be a good fit for him. Just imagine him singing a Chris Cross song. On second thought, I'd rather not. He is good within his niche. But within the AI contract is not where he'd be a good fit.
Pity that Elise left last week. She could have really shined with the theme of this week.

I thought Phil was awful. I did not like his version of 'The Letter'. First, he has the balls to say he didn't like the original version, then his version totally sucked. Then what annoyed me even more was that JLo never heard that song before. The song is a classic. Better than anything that she will ever record. I'm a big Box Tops/Alex Chilton fan, so that whole segment pissed me off.
I really hated the duet with Phil and Josh. Josh sounded great, and sang effortlessly. Phil, on the other hand, did not sound good at all, and didn't put much effort into the song. It's really annoying that the judges keep sugarcoating things by saying he's just different. He's not different in a good way.
Hollie was outstanding. I'm really hoping she sticks around, because she's really peaking at the right time. She's making great song choices, and executing them well.
Jessica was pretty mediocre. Especially the first song. I wouldn't be surprised if she went home.
I liked both of Skylar's performances. I'm not a big fan of country, but I really liked her song choices, and performances.
Josh is probably the best all around vocalist. I like his voice, when he's not screaming. His verson of 'To Love Somebody' was pretty incredible.
The best thing about the show last night, was having Little Steven as a mentor.

I guess that's what bugs me too. P2 has been off key (notice how Little Steven made the comment about not 'getting' the key change in the song) on several of his songs, but not one 'pitchy' comment from Randy.
Seemed like it took Joshua a while to find his place in the duet. Not how even the judges said the last half of it was the best. But singing with someone who is off key is hard, especially when you have those inner ear monitors they wear. Once Joshua tuned him out and found his pitch, the song got better. But I was talking to the MUCH better half during the first part saying "this is a train wreck".
And agree some on Jessica. She just hasn't been the same since she was voted off and saved. She still seems shell shocked at times. Seems to have a bit of the deer-in-the-headlights look about her. Prior to the save, when she finished singing everyone was going "WOW". Now they're saying "she did pretty good". It's like she's become timid in her performances. Where Skylar responded well to the challenge of being in the bottom, she seems to be frightened by it. Earlier in the season when Jessica sang the Whitney song, everyone was wowed and started handing her the title and wondering who would finish second. Now, she may not even make the top 3 unless she gets that swagger back.
Not sure Skylar will win, but she'll have a VERY successful career once the tour ends and she's inevetably signed to a recording contract.

I think Skylar has it all figured out. If she doesn't win, it won't be because of anything she did, or didn't do. She's been spot on.

Philip was way off pitch last night, we all know it yet not a word said?
Some thoughts:
In terms of the judges noticeable lack of criticism toward contestants this year, I believe the producers have simply conceded to the voters, and have told Steven, Randy and JLow to stand down regarding 'overly' negative comments. The producers are building all the "tour' contestants up to popularize the concerts, inflate ticket sales. It makes sense to me. Why bash the tour participants when ultimately the voters decide who they want to hear anyway. Make them out to be the best thing you've ever heard, encourage more ticket sales.

I dunno. Jimmy has levelled some pretty harch criticism towards the contestants so far this season on results nights. So far this season I've thought his critiques have been pretty much spot on. I've disagreed with a couple, but mostly due to personal taste. But when someone missed it, he's been pretty outspoken.

I'm glad Jimmy is offering some honest opinions. I enjoy his comments. However X1, Jimmy doesn't carry celebrity status in the eyes of the teeny boppers.
If Jimmy and Tyler or J low were addressing a stadium full of idol watchers, I'm certain the zombies would follow Tyler's or J low's advise regarding contestants performance wise.
It's sad, but true.

Jessica, Hollie and Skylar are terrific.
However, TG, X1, this following female singer IS INDEED the real deal. In fact if she were on the idol stage right now, the girls would take a back seat.
Listen to the "tone quality ", range and vocal riffs about 2:30 minutes into the song.
Outstanding!
