Me too! Great minds/ hot people (lol) think alike!
I have a little different take on it. Almost all of those in the top 12 have good voices. But 3 stand out in that they not only sing well, they each do their own 'version' of the songs. They just don't repeat what the original sounded like. While all are good vocalists, I think 3 that are good artists are:
1: Jason Castro
2: Brooke White
3: David Cook
I think, at best, one of those makes it to the top 3. But I think they're the better artists of the group. The rest, at least so far, have pretty much just parroted their songs.

David A
Brooke White
Carly Smithson
Right now these are the three I would like to see and I think they are the three most likely as well. Possibly David Cook will make it instead of Carly. I am very strong on David A and Brooke very unsure on the third finalist.

Jason Castro would not be in my top three... or four... or five!

I find it hilarious that everyone is putting Jason Castro up there! I enjoy watching him too because of his timid nature and solid performances, but I'm not sure he'll make it into the finals. I hope he does though!
I predict that David Archuleta will win the whole thing unless something drastic happens.

Well for me it boils down to potential, rather than demonstrated vocal.
I tend to consider what it would be like watching a contestant for 12 weeks, and considering how the voting opinion changes, rather than holds stable. For sure there have been extremely talented vocalists and performers on AI that were surpassed by a contestant that was regarded as less talented going in, but whose potential and growth captivated the audience.
A perfect example of this was last year's performers: Jordin, Blake, and Melinda.
Going into the top 12, many people were picking Melinda to win the whole thing. And this was a valid judgement based on her consistently good performances. Many people were endeared to Jordin, and Blake was barely gaining press at the time- his buzz was at its beginning.
Week after week people were enjoying Melinda, she got the nod from the judges each week- but our opinion was pretty flat. Yes we liked her. Yes she was talented. Yes she could perform. That was part of the problem- we knew what we had and were excited when Jordin grew stronger each week, and Blake was just entertaining to watch.
Call it the Melinda syndrome if you like. Developed performer- nowhere really to go.
That's why I see performers like Carly and Michael Johns finishing fairly high, but probably won't win because we already know what we have from both of them. David Archuleta is also in danger of this happening, because we are in awe of his talent, but he hasn't shown us anything "fun" yet.
The folks that can catch and beat the "professional" grade performers are the developing artists- namely David Cook and Brooke White, because they can really develop on stage. But also remember the demgraphics- so someone fresh, young, and developing like Castro has IMHO the highest potential to become an artist, grow, and still come off as young and earn the all powerful kid vote.
I'm not saying he's going to win- I'm just projecting out 12 weeks and saying he has the potential to earn the most votes (provided he grows, has fun, stays young, and stays off the chiba for 12 weeks!). I include Ramiele here too (provided she stops being so restrained on stage).
Now- if Archuleta can demonstrate he can do the fun, young stuff- he can't be beat. I'm just not sure he can do that.

I agree with all of the above. I also have to add that people are already starting to turn on David A., and for two reasons. The first: He is predictable. Predictably good, but still predictable. SoS just touched on that. He is also quickly boring the crud out of America with slow, passive song choices. He needs to pick it up. Something tells me this kid is locked into that style and may not be able to break out. The second reason: Sincerity. Do I think this kid really cares about the homeless and changing the world and bringing the peace, the way his song choices have told me he does? I think so, but in that extremely naive way that only the idealistic teenager can. He probably peed his pants when he realized he would be helping with the Idol Gives Back. Little does he know just how little Idol really gives back, along with all of the insanely rich celebs who come on and tell us working stiffs to give up our hard earned cash while they buy a 16th car and another mansion with gold toilets and ....................but I digress. I think David A. really does care about the homeless, but I wonder how long America will believe that. It does feel a bit like an act, if you are looking at it through typical, extremely jaded American eyes, not taking into account the extreme faith in humanity that some kids possess, before reality beats it out of them and they become as cynical as the rest of us. Many people have already called it an act, and started to focus elsewhere, on contestants who they understand. You know, the fame whores, the ones who care only about being famous and making money for self.
This is not my opinion. I like the kid, and I think he is an amazing singer! The lip licking bugs me a little (Watch his performances. He licks his lips CONSTANTLY! It drives me batty!), but I still think he has the best overall voice and performance style. It may not be enough though......................

1. Castro or Cook (Can't decide yet)
2. David A
Chick is now in my top 3 as young David A slips out.

rich people with golden faucets, golden everything advising the not-so-rich to donate money have always made me distrust them.
In today's society it is okay to be super rich and not have to give a red cent to charity.
some celebrities such as Brad Pitt do give with their own money. But because the ones do give are just a few, they can only make a dent in what is truly needed.

I think David Archuleta will win b/c he has mad vocals.. but he is young and appeals to younger girls and that is what sells albums!!
I like Micheal Johns and Carly too!

If people vote on voice alone no question it is all over. If they vote on other things than it is possible David A. won't win.

That performance by David H would be boring for a hall dance or wedding! What was with him tonight. It was like he wasn't trying. The only thing that will save him is if Christy takes the fall for that lame-o country twist of hers.

Yeah- the people in danger are David H. and Kristy for sure.
David H. does well when he can do big soul diva numbers. I know it sounds weird, but that's where his vocals find strength- Aretha stuff, Whitney stuff, Mary J. Blige...
Kristy does well not to sing. Okay- she can sing Amazing Grace, but so can that one girl at that one church with the things and stuff. Nothing remarkable there, except that she looks like what Kyra Sedgwick would be if she were attractive and didn't have a bowling ball case for a mouth.
The other people in danger are Ramiele for continuing to hide, and Syesha for being pretty forgettable at this point.
-SoS
Ramiele impressed on her first performance but has gone dormant since. She may make it to next week but if she doesn't amp it up she's not long for the contest. Pity, she does have a good voice.
Castro did a totally safe song. Brooke did as well.
Never liked Michael Johns. He always seems to be off key to me. Perhaps less last night, but I'm not a fan.
Amanda did 'okay'. Not great, but okay.
David H. was mediocre at best. He may be in the basement section this week.
Kristy should be sent home for that performance last night.
Chickezie was the performance of the night. He really threw it down. Part of that was likely because it was so unexpected.
David Cook can rock. One of the better performances of the night.
Syesha was kind of fogettable. What was it she sang?
Carly did well. Strong vocals. Pretty good for a plant.

I totally agree with this assessment - for everyone. Finally, another person who doesn't like Michael Johns. Other than the one Queen performance while in Hollywood, he's been absolutely terrible. I don't get why the judges like him. He's probably going to make it to the top 5 I'd bet, but I just don't get it.

Not sure why there is all this anti-Michael Johns sentiment. I thought his performance this week was one of the best of the group. He and Carly were the only ones who really delivered. I suspect that people don't realize how difficult "Across the Universe" is to sing and what a haunting melody it has. Michael captured the essence of the song perfectly. I think he can do almost any kind of music and will be competitive to the very end if he stays popular with the voters.

I really liked his performance this week and was stunned to hear the Judges comments. I thought this week was his best! Paula got it right where Randy and Simon failed to recognize a great performance!

I thought he did a good job on 'across the universe.' He stayed true to the melody which is hauntingly beautiful.

If I had been familiar with Across The Universe I may have been more impressed but that was the first time I had ever heard the song.....
I've heard that song before. Not one of my faves but he did it well. I have just never become a fan of Johns. He did well this week but in previous weeks he's been off key several times yet gets praised by the judges. I guess I just don't get him.

I'm not a big fan of Johns either.
There's no question he has charisma, and picks the best songs of any of the contestants. What I don't care for is the fact that it's a pretty "flat" ride if you close your eyes and listen to the vocals. He did a good job with the song this week because he works well within melodies, but every time there is a big finish or a big note- he simply just backs off or let's the note fall- passing it off as stylistics. So you end up watching the performance going "Cool, it's like I'm watching Michael Hutchins again" except in your desperation for something really entertaining you're forgetting that you're really watching some second rate-lounge singing version of Hutchins.
Randy and Simon finally tried to call him on it, but they were late by one week (they were actually wrong this week because there wasn't much to knock out of the park in his song). They should have called him on it on the other songs (most of which only had 4 words running over and over).
So is Michael Johns good? Sure- he's good. He's just ridiculously overrated- and I'd expect more raw talent from a plant.

Exactly, they should have called him on it on the prior performances but this last one was good. Hopefully Johns can step it up now??
I myself didn't think he sounded like Michael Hutchin's in one of his past performances but he certainly reminded me of him with the way he looked and carried himself. I hope he steps it up because what a dynamite combo that would be.
