When he first got in, I thought, "Oh, so he'll be this year's Sanjaya !" But there's one major difference.
While David may indeed garner a lot of the votes of the younger viewers, his voice, unlike Sanjaya's, which lacked maturity, shows a vocal maturity beyond his years. I'd bet you a dozen doughnuts right now that David doesn't win, but I don't cringe at the idea of him winning the way I did at Sanjaya last year. I think this kid may indeed have something on the ball; I knew Sanjaya never did.
I hope that this one little microcosm of the show is an indicator that this year's crop of singers is indeed better than last year's.
Let's hope so. Last season was a snore-bore.

I am inclined to think this season may be just as boring, esp. considering how many of the top 24 were not featured during auditions. I think TPTB are trying to create a fan base only for the select plants, I mean few, that they want to win it. Seems a bit silly, esp. considering that the best season IMO, was season 5, and was full of amatures. Who will ever forget Pickles? She was terrible, but not Sanjaya terrible. People loved her for being stupid. That's entertainment.

I don't think them playing instruments will help. They were a total distraction, during the auditions.
Kind of what I've been thinking. I think they had great talent in AI5 to the point they thought they could get 'cute' in AI6 and turn it into an extended audition freak show. I think the show still had decent ratings, but they flattened out. I also don't think many in the top 5 have sold many albums either (unlike AI5 where several have). So they've over-compensated and grabbed a bunch of 'semi-pros' for this season hoping it will bring a new spark that will bring in more viewers. But only time will tell how this season will wind up.

Now it starts--the popularity contest. David A. will always do well since he's so appealing, and he has a great voice. However, this performance revealed his weaknesses. He's young and unpolished and may struggle when out of his comfort zone. Performers like Brooke, Carly, Jason, David C. all are far more professional and know how to milk the most out of their choices. He showed very little understanding of the song he was singing (which he admitted), but will need to step up if he wants to compete once the next three or four contestants take a hike. I like the guy. What's not to like? But all of the above folks are much more exciting at this stage in the competition. I look forward to seeing what they will do next while with David A., I fear what he will do.

Never been a fan of Phil Collins. He has a tin-y voice. Elton John is pretty good, but he stays in his comfort range vocally. George Michael kicks the crap out of most vocalists in history, save Freddy Mercury, and David A. is the Chicken Bones to the King Crab of his voice! Sting has a dope range, plus style and soul in his vocals.
David A. has decent range, and a breathy quality. He also has a slow, soft style, from which he cannot break free. He has minimal power behind his notes. Plus, he isn't growing AT ALL!!! He may have peaked. Both he and Ramielle need to kick it into high gear! Consistently great, but boring singing do not an American Idol make!

David's voice has a quality to it that is very pleasing to the ear when it's allowed to be what it is. When it's in that zone, it's the best ear candy on the show. Thing is, what I'm hearing from David right now is one style only. David is a great crooner, but he's not going to croon his way to an AI win.
I think nothing but the best of the young man, but I stand by my bet at the outset. A dozen doughnuts says he doesn't win it all.

Crooner is a very old fashioned term. Are Elton John and Phil Collins crooners. David had one, count it one, crappy performance when he showed his nerves while singing a crappy song. I think it is way to quick to say he can only sing one style. Phil and Elton can rock and I bet David A can also. As for your bet that is a pretty loaded bet when it started out 24-1 against. I wouldn't be surprised either way and I am not sure if I even want David A to win this. Idol might ruin him. David is the only one of these finalists IMO that has a chance to be something special.

Shop Around isn't Rock but it isn't crooning either. He did that one very nicely. So in that case he has shown he can do more than sing ballads is a better way to put it than saying crooning. I just think it is strange to be passing judgement on something you have so little information on.

To address each of your points :
Yes, the term "crooner" has been in use for several generations, but as a matter of fact, my son is a professional musician. He is 26 years old, has toured the U.S. and Europe and is currently working on his 4th album. His vocal style on certain songs has been referred to in reviews written by his own comtemporaries as "crooning." It might only be that no one has come up with a better term to replace it. What would you call that vocal style ?
Yes, EJ and PC are, at times, "crooners," as many famous artists are. There's nothing derogatory about that term. Look it up.
If David A can rock, he needs to show it soon. Is that what I said, that he can't do it ? Read my post. I'm not saying he can't do it, only that he hasn't shown it yet. Yes, Phil and Elton can rock. My son can, too. Difference - They've all shown it.
I agree that David has had only one poor performance, but it was not on a "crappy" song. He simply did a poor job on it. He did not do his homework, and it showed. No, he didn't deserve to be voted off because of one misstep, and I'm glad he wasn't.
My bet is loaded ? Possibly. But the odds are now only 11 - count 'em, 11 - to one against it, and I still stand by it. That's all I'm saying.
And finally, yes, finishing first in AI does seem to be close to fatal for the male performers.
To reiterate, I think nothing but the best of David Archuletta and wish him nothing but the best. But neither he nor anyone else is going to win AI unless they prove they are more than one-dimensional. If David has his eyes on the prize, he'd better get busy proving it.

To sum it up, David A has a boring, one style, fabulous, good quality voice.
He needs to reach out more to the audience, and be more versatile and of course, good songs selection.
He is still one of my best male performers, besides Jason C and Mic. John.

Edge that was a very well written response. The only disagreements with you are that Bing Crosby was a crooner nowadays you call them Ballad singers. The other is "We can work it out" was probably the crappiest song the Beatles ever did with the exception of "number 9". I wish he had done "a day in the life" or "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".You acknowledged that winning Idol can be a very bad thing for a male vocalist. If I had my choice in the matter I think it would be better if David A was not on Idol this year. Give him a couple more years to mature before he is thrown into this high pressure world. The thing that amazed me before last week was that he never did seem to be bothered by the pressure but last week in the interview I got a very bad feeling even before he performed. He was so nervous and unsure of himself going into performing a Beatles number as he wasn't very familiar with them at all.
A funny thought just came to my brain. David's best performance according to most people was Imagine. Imagine was a Lennon song written shortly after the breakup. It seems strange to me that he felt so nervous about doing a Lennon/McCartney song.

In response to Edge and L of C: Crooner is a very current term. It was repopularized in the 90's by Harry Conick Jr. and in the 00's by Michael Buble' (who performs like a drunken lounge singer, but whatever).
The song: great! Can't argue with the Beatles. The arrangement: GREAT! Can't argue with Stevie Wonder! The performance: Terrible. Why? Well, David didn't know the song, didn't feel comfortable with the pacing or arrangement, and overall did not own the performance. Why else would he give so many excuses before hand. He knew he was going to suck. (BTW, this is his second bad performance. "Another Day in Paradise" was flat and sharp all over the place! In other words, "pitchy")
David A. is a one trick pony, but the contest is full of them this year, so it isn't really a problem. I don't think he is in any danger, but I am way underwhelmed! However, that is not saying much. Most of them are underwhelming me lately!

1 song very well does not make an idol...I liked his a little at first but I want to see him take on some challenges I just don't think he is up to that task....I remember last year when folks didn't think our Beloved Melinda could sing anything other than what was in her comfort zone and she showed them that she could sing anything!! Feisty getting feisty again. We can work it out was a lousy song. The Beatles are the greatest band of all time but still way overrated. They are not perfect. Edge I also want to comment on your George Michael and Freddy Mercury statements. George Michael is the guy I think has the cleanest voice of any pop singer ever. Elton and Phil for example have the tonal aspects to their voice that are distinctive George is just more pure is my best way to put it. Most people like those tonal elements it seems as Elton and Phil are much bigger stars per se than George Michael. Freddy Mercury on the other hand was pretty tonal and I love him as well. Relating this back to David A is I see a chance for him to get to the level of the greats. I am not saying he is there yet but I see a chance. I hope he fulfills his potential. Part of the problem with his being on Idol is he is being subjected to ridiculous levels of criticism and perhaps praise from people like me. It would be so much better if he weren't in this thing.

I do agree with you about some of the Beatles' songs, but I like that one, as well as the Stevie Wonder arrangement. I just felt that David wasn't confident about the performance, and it totally came through.

You have poisoned your sond mind. J/K I will have to listen to David Cooks song from tonight. He is my second favorite. You give David A grief for being predictable and safe how about Jason. Michelle my Belle is so sappy I have to wash the syrup off after listening to that but you like him. Long and Winding road is beautiful but without the syrup.

Lol I did say that he has a beautiful voice but he always sings the same style of music and never changes the arrangements......Jason is so pretty and he didn't do as good as I would have liked him to but perhaps next week he will get another chance.....I think I remember him saying that he was more comfortable just playing the guitar......All 3 of them David cook my absolute fav as well as David A and Jason should be safe.....

OK I listened to the whole performance of David A on long and winding road. Better than the Beatles. Blasphemy I know.
He sang it very well but no one sings it better than Paul. No way hosay!
I can't hear that song without spilling a tear that song chokes me up.

David sang "You're the Voice" beautifully and I really liked it. It was kind of Michael Bolton like so if that bothers you than I guess it does. I personally think that David is taking a lot of grief from people because he is a male who is young and "cute". That is what I thought would come and bite him in this competition and for a little while I thought people were above that kind of childish behavior but ever since his one bad performance on "We can work it out" people have just been looking for any excuse to rip on him. He was excellent on "The Long and Winding Road" and he was excellent on "You're the Voice". David A is still the best talent this year but I do admit that I am really starting to like David Cook as well.

I really, really, really, doubt that David would lie about that. The song was a joyous celebration of life type thing and I think it totally fits Davids personality. I really liked it. What should he have done just looked at the charts and picked something from the top? He picked a song I had never heard before. To me that is a good thing.
David did indeed choke under the lights or pressure or whatever you want to call it and forgot a couple words. As for forgetting the words being unforgiveable the Beatles themselves have forgotten words to their own songs in concert so what does that mean to you? Professional singers will on occasion forget the words. Brooke started and stopped on "Every Breath You Take" is that forgivable?

I don't get the comparison.....Michael Bolton has a raw side to his voice that David's doesn't I know you are a huge David A fan and I respect that...

Not so much the voice as the kind of song and style it was sung in. In the chorus when David went whoaaaaooooooooooahoaoh it instantly made me think of Michaeld Bolton.

David A did a better job than John Lennon??? Do you really think so. I cringe when I see that. John Lennon has more talent than all the idols put together. Please lets not OVER RATE these contestants.

I personally preferred it to the Beatles version but only by the tiniest margin. I usually like the originals best but I am not loyal to the original if I think somebody has stepped it up a notch. Eva Cassidy is a singer that is dead now but when alive she sang nothing but covers and I preferred her remakes about 80% of the time over the originals. I encourage you all to check her out and if anybody else out their is familiar with her can you add an AMEN!

Hey...I have heard Eva Cassidy. Yes Excellent. I'm sure you have heard her version of Over the rainbow...flawless..yes....excellent version...BUT still not as good as the original. I think it's because the song was written by two men ...for the movie (I think that is correct) And Judy Garland at her young age made it the song that it now is...those that cover a song and YES...do a great job have that original to go by.....but Judy made that song. it's hers...always will be. BUT...I will say and AMEN to Eva Cassidy...love her!

I think "Over the Rainbow" is probably the most covered song of all time. I will always have a sentimental place in my heart for the original but I like Eva's version better.

You are right about her verison. It's great. i also think you might have hit the nail on the head about the sentimental thing with the originals...with me...it is a sentimental thing more than anything. I am just way to loyal! there is another verison of over the rainbow...it's by a guy and I've heard it on a movie...but just cannot remember where or which movie..it's good.

The version you are thinking about is by a Hawaiian artist named "Israel Kamakiwiole or something close to that. It was in the movie 50 First Dates and is also on the soundtrack to Finding Forrester. It is unquestionably the best version of "Over the Rainbow but since it mixes in "What a Wonderful World" it is more like a new and different song completely. That song is flat out AMAZING!

Lance, I think your homosexual feelings for David, are really clouding your judgement.
If you think his version is better than the Beatles' version, then you need therapy.

lemondrop4

John Lennon & Stuart Stutcliff, Paul McCartney & George Harrison. Stuart died from a brain hemorrage...Pete Best was the drummer before Ringo. Stuart and John were Art colleges friends. next came Paul who brought George. Ringo came last

Very good Lemon Drop but that didn't answer my question. What was the original name of the band. It was not "The Beatles". What was it. Using the internet on this is cheating so on your honor.

Yes good enough you got it. Depending on how you look at it they could have been the blackjacks, The Quarrymen or the Silver Beetles. Johnny and the Moondogs was a band that Lennon had but never included McCartney so I don't think that counts.

They actually picked Beetles as a kind of tribute to Buddy Holly who's band was called the Crickets. Than they got the idea of using Beat as a musical term so it became "The Beatles"

Wow! I have no idea about anything about this, maybe because by the time that The Beatles were at the Hot 100, I wasn't even born, eventhough, it is always good to learn some new things ;), and today I've learned a little bit of the Beatles History. You should post another interesting trivia, mayby in a new thred ;)

I was actually only 8 when the Beatles broke up in 1971 But I think it was soon after when I became a huge Paul McCartney fan. I remember my mom telling me his Beatles stuff is even better! So I stared checking it out...wow ! It was and still is awesome! I read everything I could get my hands on...and watched every documentary and every show about the beatles. Still do. My kids love the Beatles too...like they have a choice.

Lemondrop did you catch that I said overrated BUT STILL THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME. When I say overrated some people treat them like they are god or something. They are great but not as great as some think they are. There are other bands that are almost as good. I didn't watch the show tonight so I can't say about Jason. I did Youtube Archuleta of course. Some call him boring and predictable but he is the one taking chances IMO. So far he has sang three songs I had never heard before. You're the Voice, Smoky Mountain Memories and Angels. I really liked You're the Voice and the last two flat out awesome.
