Tonight was a night of new revelations, and wonderful surprises. Read on and tell me what you thought.
***********
Chris Daughtry: A wonderful surprise INDEED! I never would have imagined Chris singing in such a sweet and smooth way. I have always imagined him singing in that strong vibratto. But tonight, he adapted to the element perfectly, and his fans will surely appreciate it.
Paris Bennet: Paris...why don't you sound like that off the stage? Paris's voice was stunning tonight. A sweet reminiscent taste of what musical legends would have sounded like in the 1950's. Bravo Paris...bravo.
Taylor Hicks: Hmmmmm... Taylor...I hate to say it. But you bored me halfway through your song. Your vocals weren't bad. But it showed me that if your "pizzaz" isn't melded into your song, it just doesn't spark any interest. I think you should be in the bottom three this week.
Elliot Yamin: Elliot, your vocals were okay for me tonight. I wasn't impressed with the performance, but appreciated the "look" you gave to the camera during the performance. Good luck this week, because you'll need it.
Ace Young: Ace, you did good tonight! Yes, I had to practically slap myself three times, but hey! You did pretty well. Though that performance didn't match up to par with the other contestants.
Kellie Pickler: Kellie...it was awful. Your country accent was slurrish, and I could hardly understand half of what you sang. If America is fair, you need to be put in the bottom three this week.
Katharine McPhee: Katharine Mcphee....where should I start? First of all...your gorgeous, and that performance riveted me to my coach throughout the whole song. And you made me do something that I didn't do tonight before you.....I REWINDED it THREE times...just to hear that angelic pure voice. Katharine McPhee...just like Simon stated...is "LEAGUES apart from the rest of the contestants".
****
This was an entertaining night, and I deeply enjoyed it.
The majority of the performances were good, and am eager for tomorroww.
Who should be in the bottom three?
Taylor(didn't work for me)
Elliot(Just a weaker performance)
Kellie(I couldn't understand half of it)

You and Simon are trying to "butter that muffin!"
Katherine was okay...but she wasn't any better than most of the other contestants!

Well if it's 1945, and you are sitting in the parlor with your date, then by all means the perfect choice is......Katharine Mcphee's songbook.
But you are 100% right on Kellie!!!!!!!!

Haha....are you okay? I'm not controlling your voting, and just to add, I do LOVE buttering that muffin, so if you didn't like Kat tonight.....just don't VOTE for her^_^
Tell me what you thought about the performances tonight...I'm truly interested.
I'm wondering what everyone thought, and I want to know what you think too.

Chris: Excellent, saw more emotion than usual, which I liked.
Paris: Who?
Taylor: Good, but still missing his extra something.
Elliott: Very Good, but I think it could have been better, I do like Elliott
Ace: Very "Charming"!
Kellie: Oh, it was awful! Not Good! Bottom 3? maybe so!!!
Katharine: Great Vocals, But what audience is she trying to capture? She always seems so "old Fashioned". Not that there's anything really wrong with that but I like something "edgier".

Hehe....
Yes..I'm male...a teen male to be exact...and that's why my posts are so freakin giddy.
I'm in love with Katharine, and yes...I sound too preppy in my columns.
But anyways, hi Frank.....and you're male too right? ^_^

My take on tonight
Chris Daughtry: I have always thought Chris was a talented rocker, and when I heard that he was going to sing "It's a Wonderful World" I didn't think I would like it (I've always thought this song is corny), but Chris made me think of the joy I feel in living--Heartfelt and very good- I WAS WRONG--Chris is not just a one dimensional performer (way to go).
Paris Bennet: Paris was absolutely great tonight! I really like that she dresses the role of the songs. It's just something a 16 year old would do. It's refreshing to see and there is NO WAY she deserves to be in the bottom three after that performance.
Taylor Hicks: He sang "You Send Me" okay, but there was not much vocal stretch in that song. He powered it up at the end, but I agree that he could be a bottom three.
Elliot Yamin: I thought Elliott performed well too, but he could be battling Taylor for the final bottom three spot.
Ace Young: Ace sang okay too, but I think he will be singing that song again tomorrow night (definite bottom three).
Kellie Pickler: Kellie really was lost tonight. She didn't connect with the song, didn't sing or perform it well, and based on her performance should be in the bottom three. I WAS WRONG about Kellie...she really is that ditzy. I don't mean this in a mean way--I like people who are who they are. I'm glad she isn't a phony.
Katharine McPhee: Katharine Mcphee was brilliant. She sang "someone to watch over me" in several styles, blended them all beautifully, and just had fun with it! I really agreed with Simon. Tonight she was THE journeyman performer and the others also gave (except Kellie) very good peformances.
Pick for bottom three:
1. Taylor/Elliott
2. Kellie
3. Ace

Ace was awesome tonite!
bottom 3:

Idolsmidol; It would be my pleasure to be your very own personal "Dancing Monkey" Let's see, I'll put my lil Hat on...
Get my tin cup.....And have you crank up the old organ....
Do any of you think that while the show is airing, the producers are drinking heavily, with their pants off, watching some other network? Everyone sounded the same tonight. Kellie and Ace were bad, but they're always bad. More and more this show is beginning to take on the look of an episode of the X-Files. I'm submitting to all of you the fact that A.I. is using their alien singers to induce their will upon us through mind control. It is apparent that Simon is the Head Alien pulling the strings on all of us. Hold on I have to vote for Kellie again....So midol you can go to bed now, dream about what Fox has planted in your subconscious. And when you awake in the morning, you will have no recollection of any of this......BuwhaawwHaHaHa

Here's my personal scorecard. On a scale of 1-10 most were within the high 8's...all performances were excellent with the exception of Kellie, whose fans will forgive her for it and vote for her anyway. What's difficult about judging tonight is the fact that the performances were all top-notch, so you really have to watch the entire show all the way through before you pick out good from best.
Chris: Chris earned a high 8 tonight. Good vocal- he demonstrated some range and turned a corner with the judges and fans. He's just guaranteeing another safe round, and an impressive performance after a couple of weeks of being not-so-good.
Paris: I'm going to have to give Paris a 9 for tonight's performance. I thought she was well within her element tonight, and her song was spotless.
Taylor: An 8 for Taylor. Was bored for most of the song, until the end where he really brought everything home and reminded us why we like him in the first place.
Elliot: A solid 9 for my man- I really felt he knocked it out of the park- and he's coming into his own. Of course the fickle fanbase will still leave him in the bottom 3, but it is VERY undeserved at this point- he is SOLID.
Kellie: Wow...I shudder to give her a 7 for her performance, It simply wasn't there- bad song choice, poor vocals, and she outpaced the song at the end which will land her at the top of the bottom three...but she won't be going home.
Ace: I'll give him a high 7, but I almost feel like Adam Sandler did a better job with that song than he did. He dropped his falsetto, right at the point in which he should have leaned on his one strength vocally. I don't believe we'll be seeing Ace next week.
Katharine: (watches for the anti-Katharinites...) I'll put it to you this way:
My girlfriend said she was planning on singing "Someone to Watch Over Me" for me someday, but now she feels she can't do the song justice anymore. Katharine was brilliant tonight- point blank- and people that don't see that are simply used to her normally outstanding quality of talent and/or dissuaded by other factors such that they refuse to give credit no matter how plainly it stares them in the face? What does this girl have to do to impress the haters out there? She's a better singer than 80% of the people we hand out Grammys too for crying out loud... and to think that she didn't give an excellent performance tonight is self-delusional.
That's my take. Elliot and Katharine hit home runs, and if we have to hide their names from the haters just to see it, then so be it.

A view from the left coast...
Overall I give the contestants a B+ for this week's effort. Other than Kellie's self-admitted butchering of BB&B I didn't think anyone tanked although I'll not be nearly as effusive in my praise as the judges were. Rod Stewart was a hoot. His lack of pretentiousness and self-deprecating style actually added to the enjoyment of the show; unlike the recent "teacher for a night" appearances from Kenny Rogers and Barry Manilow.
Chris was just "okay" in my book, but I enjoyed hearing him sing something on the soft side. It showed his voice may be better than people give him credit for. Still a threat to win it all, without question he's safe. Grade: A
Paris I remain unimpressed with her song picking, and although she can belt them out with the best her peformances strike me as mechanical. She should be safe but who knows? Grade: B
Taylor isn't going to win this competition but he should make it into the final three. There wasn't anything special about tonite's performance, but he didn't do anything to hurt himself either. Grade: B+
Kellie I give her major props for one thing: She knew she screwed up and wasn't afraid to admit it----no doubt much to the chagrin of the Pickler haters who insist she is as phony as a $3 bill. Based strictly on tonite's performance she should be going home tomorrow, but her fan base is probably large enough to save her. Regardless, I made this prediction before and I stand by it---she isn't going to win this competition but she is going to be a big star either on television or in the movies or as a country western singer. Maybe all three. Paula's right, the camera loves this kid. Grade: C-
Elliott Unlike the judges, I think tonite's performance proved that his voice isn't nearly as good as people keep insisting. Not a bad job mind you but nothing to write home about either. And he is still in need of a major personality transplant. He could be in trouble but probably will survive the week. Grade: B
Ace If history is any guide, the week Simon finally says something good about a shakey contestant is usually when they get sent packing. He is clearly the weakest performer left, and I think if he survives he should immediately abandon the Antonio Banderas look and go back to the boy-toy N-sync facade. 15 year old girls may fantasize about sleeping with their boyfriend's older brother, but I doubt they have many fantasies about sleeping with their boyfriend's father. Grade: C
Katherine Anyone who doesn't think this is McPhee's competition to lose just hasn't been paying attention. She is consistently excellent---perhaps not spectacular---but you can see her confidence growing week by week and I don't think we yet seen the best she has to offer. Grade: A+

the bottom 3 tonight are Ace, Taylor and Kat. and I'm a Kat lover. But this is the only week I put her in the bottom 3. Tonights Top 3 are Chris, Elliott and Paris. and Ace needs to TAKE A HIKE. C'mon now ...
p.s. Chris and Kat are my 2 faves. So please don't get me wrong on the bottom 3. But c'mon now, Kellie wasn't that bad tonight!! she was good on Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. It FIT HER!!!

Excellent review, Son of Simon.
Bravo SoS! I have truly missed your posts. Out of all of us fellow posters, you are the King! (who said the King is dead?) And if AI brings in an average Joe as a guest contestant you have my vote--you would represent us well. (Come on AI--let's have a fourth judge-- each week a different viewer that understands music)
I have missed your thoughtful and poignant (where is spell check when you need it) reviews. Glad you are back and posting.
P.S. I just had a scary thought--What if AI really did that--Bring in guest judges and Frank was their representing us--OMG--that would be a definite VCR alert!!! :D The world according to Frank--bizarre but oh so funny.
Do any of you think that while the show is airing, the producers are drinking heavily, with their pants off, watching some other network? Everyone sounded the same tonight. Kellie and Ace were bad, but they're always bad. More and more this show is beginning to take on the look of an episode of the X-Files. Now that you've spilled the beans, the black helicopters will be coming for you!
My take:
Chris: Better than expected. But I only expected he would do enough to get by this week. Pretty solid performance. But would it hurt for that guy to smile when he's singing?
Paris: Excellent. Very good vocals. Though she could end up in the cellar due to lack of fan base enjoyed by The Annointed 3 (TA3).
Taylor: As a member of TA3, he'll be back next week. Part of his song was rather boring, but the fan base will likely keep him out of the cellar. But giving half a performance won't get it in the long run.
Elliott: Solid if not overwhelming. He does smile and was pretty natural in doing this song. But he gets knocked for 'personality' while Chris never smiles and that's okay? But Chris is in TA3 so I guess that's that. Elliot could end up in the cellar again, but that's due to lack of fan base, not lack of talent.
Ace: That nasal bit was too much for me. He's the weakest vocalist remaining and I can't see him remaining much longer. Should have been gone last week. Is this his time?
Kellie: Horrible. If the votes were based on this weeks performance alone she'd be saying goodbye tonight. But as the final in TA3 she'll be safe, perhaps not even landing in the bottom 3.
Katharine: A+. While I don't agree with Simon that she was so much better than all the others (though I'm sure it was different being there in person) she did very well. She's consistently excellent, but so far not in TA3.
In sum:
Top tier for me were: Katharine, Paris, Elliott, and perhaps Chris.
Next tier: Taylor (saved it toward the end of his song) follows closely behind the top tier, with Ace a distant second in this group.
Bottom rung: Kellie. She's not nearly as bad a singer as the performance last night. But that one stunk. I do predict her fan base keeps her safe though.
