Muckabeeraking

You would think that, if there was ever a conservative Republican who could get the approval of liberal muckraker Joe Conason of the New York Observer, it would be Mike Huckabee, he of the reasonable tax policy and the reputation for pardons and commutations of criminals.

I was looking for the first Conason column on the subject, since Conason is an Arkansas-watcher from way back, having teamed with ace Little Rock reporter Gene Lyons to do the ultimate Clinton book, The Hunting of the President: The Ten-Year Campaign to Destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton. Conason’s verdict (http://www.wittenburgdoor.com/little-monkeys#):

Huckabee is not a merciful man at all, but a practitioner of “Christian cronyism” of a type that “the nation’s founders meant to forbid.” He gives a few examples of Huckabee exercising forgiveness to prisoners who found Jesus while in prison and suggests, without saying so directly, that he only pardoned those who had religious conversions.

Therefore, of the two most famous politicians from Hope, Arkansas, Conason comes down on the side of the one who flew back to Arkansas in the middle of his first presidential campaign to watch the execution of the mentally retarded Ricky Ray Rector. One thing we know about Hope: they do turn out some wacky Baptists. And some excellent watermelons, by the way.

The president of the Catholic League has come out against Huck's ad. Not surprising. I used to be Catholic. They were kind of weak compared to the born-agains. Bill Donohue said the ad was too religious. WTF?

Do you really think he will win or is he just having his 15 minutes? Something about him tells me no. I don't think so. The number one issue for Republicans is immigration and he is weak on that. He wants to give FREE college tuition to criminal alien's kids. WTF? Americans have to pay their own and criminal aliens get it free?

If that's his only negative, he may be ok. Americans are quick to forgive but he HAS to change that stance or it may be his undoing.

I do like most of the rest of him though. :)

Atheist Attacks Mike Huckabee (http://huckabeehound.blogspot.com/2007/12/atheist-attacks-mike-huckabee.html)

Christopher Hitchens is a rabid, anti-Christian atheist. If you believe in God and the Bible, Hitchens more than likely hates you, just as he hates Mike Huckabee.

You see, the atheist's worst nightmare (http://www.slate.com/id/2180159/) is to have a God-fearing man in the white house.

Hitchens writes:

I will on no account vote for a smirking hick like Mike Huckabee, who is an unusually stupid primate but who does not have the elementary intelligence to recognize the fact that this is what he is. My right to say and believe that is already guaranteed to me by the First Amendment. And the right of Huckabee to win the election and fill the White House with morons like himself is unaffected by my expression of an opinion.

Christians cannot stand for garbage like this. The reason Christianity is becoming less prominent in this country is because atheists are attacking and Christians aren't standing up for what they believe.

Mike Huckabee actually stands up for what he believes. He isn't ashamed to be a Christian. He is honest. He is smart. And he actually welcomes friendly debate. Christopher Hitchens is a man of hatred who would like America to become the same as his British homeland, where people are becoming more and more hostile to Christianity.

Where is the sanity here. We have the Republican establishment attacking Huckabee, like Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, etc. etc., and we also have the rabid left democrats slandering him as well. What this tells me is that Huckabee terrifies both sides because he actually wants to do something they can't stand: unite the American people rather than divide.

I doubt this will happen, the man doesn't have what it takes to lead our country.

Yes, a decent Christian man, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. What a terrible thing. What is this world coming to?

Yes I do. Huckabee appeals to the middle working class, which is what most people are. He's very authentic, and people, especially evangelicals, can relate to him.

Romney is pretty much the opposite. He doesn't really appeal to the middle class, and he seems to be on an attack mode, which is going to hurt him. Plus, the more he talks about his Mormon faith, the less appealing he is.

Huckabee's Christmas commercial was actually very good, as well as Obama's. Hillary's and Rudy's were horrible. Romney didn't even bother to make one.
