View Full Version : A word about Spamming and Serial Posting.

Hello Idol Faithful!

This may disgust you to know, but I like spam. It's wondrous mystery meat, best eaten on a hang-over day, burnt beyond recognition atop a plate of white rice. mmmm....

But I hate internet spam. As a moderator, I also like to prepare my internet spam the same way, burn it beyond recognition, but skip the plate of rice. Spamming hinders our ability to navigate the forums to get to the messages we want to read and reply to. Spammers have this weird obsession with raising their post count with such wonderful tidbits as "lol" and "Yes/No." It sucks having to wade through those pointless 1-2 word posts to get to the part we want to read. Spammers can keep a "dead" topic alive on the first page of a forum and send all the topics we want to discuss several pages back, and before we know it, the forum looks like we aren't sure if Justin or Kelly is going to win American Idol...

So in a word: Don't do it. If your reply to a post is less than, say 5 words, I wouldn't post it at all. If your post is more than 5 words but it is the exact same reply you give all the time- I wouldn't post that either. If your reply is really a thinly veiled attempt to advertise cheap online travel- then expect to be banned.... ;)

We also have the potential to do what is called serial posting. Serial posting isn't as bad as spamming, but it does clutter up the forum a bit and makes the thread somewhat difficult to follow. Serial posting is essentially replying to your own reply before anyone else can respond to the thread. It's like me posting this back-to-back on a thread:

I like waffles. Do you?

Followed immediately by:

Yes I do! I also like pizza too! Tell me what you like!

It would have been best for me to modify my original post and add "pizza" to my waffles comment.

Generally, serial posting isn't so bad on a thread with a low number of posts, but serial posting 3, 4 or more messages in a row is just a different form of spamming. Please try not to do this.

Remember- spam on the forums will be burned, and should never be served with "serial". Thanks!
