View Full Version : What does the AI winner get (and give up) for winning?

I’m looking for information on some of the business dynamics involved in winning AI.

Can anyone enlighten me on what the AI winner receives for winning, and the extent of the commitment they must make to the companies that subsequently handle their career?

I know they get some kind of recording deal, but I’m not sure of the amount of money involved – is it just ‘x’ dollars towards a recording contract, or is there additional prize money that the winner can keep (or a car; vacation trips; scholarship, clothes, etc).

Also, what is the nature and scope of the commitment the winner must make to the record company – presumably there is some ‘exclusivity rights’ controlling what the winner can do in terms of recording, advertising, promotional appearances etc…but how far does it go?

Does Simon Cowell’s company handle the winner? How long is the winner tied to a contract? I’ve heard that the winners have to ‘sell their soul’ to the firm(s) managing their careers for a considerable time…does that explain why Kelly Clarkson is rather cool towards questions about AI?

Are the Top 10 contestants contractually bound to do a mini-tour?

I'm still hoping that someone out there knows the answers. I've heard the intial contract locks a contestant up for as much as 5 years...but I don't really know.

If the contract is prohibitively long or restrictive, that may partially explain why more talented people do not come forward at the tryouts...as much as I enjoy the show - and with all due respect to the contestants - it's inconceivable to me that they couldn't find 10 really top-flight aspiring young performers...because, we are down to the last 8 and frankly, there are only 2-3 max that I regard as having even a remote bona fide shot at doing something worthwhile in the music business.

I realize it is also a 'reality show' which places as much emphasis on entertainment and drama, so I'm not sure that doesn't factor into the selection of some of the contestants, but still, there must be a reason more talented contestants don't tryout.
