Hi, I am James. I just joined. I have watched 4 seasons of AI, but I have yet to come across a contestant that has the voice, charisma and looks that
say "Idol". Attributes that define Elvis, Michael Jackson, Cliff Richard,
Dusty Springfield, Nat King Cole, Tom Jones, etc. In other words, I have no
favourite idol(s). I have been listening to and watching performances by
true stars for the past 40 years, I know what makes a singer a star or superstar. For example, when Tom Jones sings, he sings with raw emotions
and great sexiness. Elvis has sex appeal, super good looks, great talent, unique singing style and stage magnetism. His attractive, sexy half smile is lovely to watch, even for the guys. I have seen all of his movies. He will always be my, like what Ryan Seacrest said, no 1 idol.
What I can't stand during these 4 years of watching is, it is common for contestants to scream at the top of their voice. If the song is melodious,
like The Power of Love, it is ok, otherwise it is just irritating loud noise, and the songs all sound alike. It seems like they are just trying to prove their
vocal power, instead of being entertaining. These young contestants need to
listen to the great songs of yesteryear to know that most of the evergreen
masterpieces are sentimental ballads, eg, John Lennon's Imagine, Elvis'
Love Me Tender and all the old X'mas songs we never tire of listening year in year out. If you sing too high, you may end up squeaky. The judges are also to be blamed for this. If you sing a soft ballad, they will say you are playing safe. This I totally disagree. This is because we sing for the sole purpose of entertaining people, give them great pleasure, and if this or that is the best way to render a song to give maximum pleasure, do it. If you sing to show off your vocal power, you will not entertain but irritate. Anyway, Bon Jovi proved this week to the contestants and judges that you don't have to scream to put people on cloud 9. That is a good song sung by a great vocal. If I do watch next week, it is mainly because of Blade. He is a breath of fresh air. I hope he sings a beautiful ballad in his own style next week. His cute face and gimmicky style will win him many votes. Last but not least, I feel that people who want to enter a very visual, TV contest like this should try their best to lose weight if they are fat, and not shave their head, or if they are bald, to wear a toupee like a lot of stars nowadays. A shaven head is so boring to look at, and it takes away from the contestant's singing talent. So is fatness. Can you imagine Michael Jackson performing
with a shaven head or is fat. I hope next year will be more exciting. I am a
filmmaker and I want to make an Elvis-type romantic comedy with great singing. I want to discover a superstar. I want a guy who can sing well,
can act, great looking, tall and has charisma. Any takers?
