Sorry gang. I'm outta here.

I've been a fan of American Idol since it started, never once missing a show. But last night will be my last. No need to respond to this as I won't ever read it.

Last night American Idol "jumped the shark." For those of you unfamiliar with the term, the phrase is a reference to the 1970s television show Happy Days. On 20 September 1977, the show aired an episode where the character Fonzie jumps a shark tank on water skis. A two-part cliffhanger episode, many fans of the show consider this episode to be the moment when they realized the show had become shameless in its self-promotion.

Last night AI lied to me.

Where were Pink, Borat, Gwen Stefani Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Michael Bublé? Where was the elimination?

They made me sit through two hours of some of the worst TV I have ever seen. It was a for-profit telethon that actually stopped for commercials. Think about that. They care so much that they will be back to tell you how much they care right after this next ad. Business as usual.

Celine and Elvis? That was the duet of a lifetime? I think that was the EXACT moment AI jumped the shark.

Annie Lennox is 20 years past her prime. She was terrible. She doesn't have the range, power or soul for that song. Celine sang well but she is a cliche. Elvis is DEAD. Pretty hip show.

Kerry Underwood did a remake of an old song and mailed it in with a music video. Madonna read some BS and then hugged the baby on cue. Bono's song was cliche and sounds like he wrote it in the limo on the way to the show.

Kelly (was EXCELLENT) but she was in another building so there wasn't an opportunity for making nice with the judges.

Ellen was cool and recognized the hypocricy in a bunch of rich people telling a bunch of "average joe's" to reach into their pockets for a dollar a day. She pledged $100K and called out all of Hollywood and the music industry.

The entire show was over-hyped, fraudulent and deceptive.

It was riddled by technical gliches and no-shows. They used Sanjaya and spit him out. They took advantage of their audience and lost at least one viewer (me).

As Randy, Paula and Simon say every week... this show is about tallent, finding the next great singer. It's a singing competition.

They took themselves too seriously and jumped the shark. Its not about the singing. It's about ratings and revenue.

Adios.

I can't agree with you more. You hit the nail on the head...and yes, I am old enough to remember the Happy Days episode.

That is what I have been trying to get across today on this board. It amazes me that so many people are so naive and seem to be HAPPY they were totally manipulated and lied to.

Is that how it has become in this country. Such apathy? Fox should be ashamed of themselves....and please don't yap about how much they raised. My goodness, they could have EASILY donated that much money and it would have NEVER even raised a blip on their financial radar.

As you mentioned, they even had the nerve to fill it with a zillion commercials...which of course they made far more than what they donated.

A complete shameless scam.

And to read this board and see that so many don't mind being had...sorta sad.

It sure seems this board is filled with very young, mind numbing, thoughtless kids that can't see through the crap. I sincerely hope some of these people wake up before they become adults...because if they don't they'll be buying a lot of "nice swampland" in Florida. Or a very large bridge in Brooklyn.

Well, it was nice talking to you, anyway. Seriously though, y'all shouldn't take it so hard. It's just a TV show, and they did raise $30 Million.

Check it - the show is just trying to find it's way in all this commercialism. Like all the companies who have bought the logo for their products.

I try to keep it real. I just got the Vocal Help Now! DVD that the American Idol Vocal Coach, Debra Byrd made. It's great and has cool interviews with Kelly Clarkson and others and performances (Anthony Federov - hottie!) - plus the great exercises that Byrd does with the Idol's in LA. Next year, you'll be writing about me!

I agree it was a scam and we were all had but if by watching the show, they were able to donate a mere $30 million (even if they made 10 times more in commercial sales), so be it. That's $30 million more than what I could afford to donate. Basically, I donated 2 hours of my time. Will I still watch AI? Damn right I will...I gotta see if I won the office pool! If only $1 makes its way to those poor folks, then something good came of it.

I agree it was a bit cheesy at times. Also, it was noted that some of the performers they advertised were no shows for whatever reason.

But in the end, any money raised to help the poor and needy is wonderful. As you said, $30M is $30M more than would have been raised without AI's show.

I read on another thread that they had 78 million votes? How much do we pay to vote? What percentage of the vote money goes to charity? If 78 million votes + corporate sponsorships $$$ = $30 million, how much profit did FOX make from the episode? Would be interesting to know.

You don't pay anything if you vote with a regular phone..
If you text in your vote it is whatever your texting charge is.

I'm glad you found out early so that you may vote as many times on your land phone for your favorite.:) However, someone told me if you redial and the number is busy you'd have to pay the charge for the redial. Apparently, she saw the charge on her bill. Otherwise if you redial when the contestant number is not busy there is no charge. So vote, vote, vote!!!

That has never happened to me and I always check my bill every month for any charges that should not be there.....I would call the phone company and complain if that happened!

i don't think there is such a charge.........shhh, let's not give the phone company anymore ideas on devising more charges...

Dea

That doesn't make sense.....
The redial is just part of the phone, why would the phone company charge you?
