Alfalfa sang off-key. Pitchy is when most of the song is okay but when certain notes are missed a little bit.

Lmao! That is exactly what I think too.....he says that way too much!
Aye, pitchy means some notes are sharp, some are flat - a bit too high, a bit too low. Certainly can come from nerves, bad monitors, etc but some singers have much more trouble with it than others.

Pitchy doesnt come from monitors ect... It means the note you are singing is a bit off the key of the song. It takes a pretty good ear to hear it and Randy has a good ear. I usually am thinking the same thing before he says it and he isnt just saying it when he has nothing to say. He is saying it because the singer isnt staying right in key with the song. Every song has a key in which certain notes fit that key. When the singer strays from those notes that fit that key he is off key or pitchy as Randy calls it.

What always gets me about Randy and his harping on pitch is that Jordin is by far the most "pitchy" of the remaining finalists. Especially this week, she had some real pitch problems.
Regarding the effect monitors and amps and mics can have on pitch, it doesn't affect pitch, but it certainly can affect how one hears sounds. Bad monitors can mess up the performer and cause them to go off pitch. And, with enough volume in a theatre or arena, pitch problems aren't so obvious to the audience. When you're hearing it straight through the tv or radio, though, every note is more defined and pitch problems glare. That's why most people sound better "live" as opposed to hearing a live performance on tv or radio.

I agree that Jordin is the most pitchy left but she has a quality that doesnt draw attention to it.

pitchy (out of pitch) = false = out of tune
This seems to be Mr. Jacksons "trade mark". I agree with him, being outta tune is a serious problem - but if you actually listen to many recordings, you'll be surprised how "pitchy" many artists are.
Mr. Jackson is no doubt the most musical of the three, so he can actually hear these things... ;-)

Absolutely untrue! The pitchy ones in the remaining crowd are the two guys that are not bald (I gave up remembering their names).
But they have ALL had moments, when they were off-key - even Melinda - just for split-seconds though, becuz she is so pro that she can correct herself EXTREMELY fast.
NO singer can ever get away from it - and in a live situation it is as tuff as it gets. Monitors are not at all ideal for hearing yourself.

I think it means they need training! I just got the Vocal Help Now! DVD that the American Idol Vocal Coach, Debra Byrd made. It's great and has cool interviews with Kelly Clarkson and others and performances (Anthony Federov - hottie!) - plus the great exercises that Byrd does with the Idol's in LA. Next year, you'll be writing about me!

As the man would phrase it:
CHECK IT OUT, BABY! You know what I like about this? You know what I REALLY like about this? You're here to WIN it, baby!
So cool!
Best wishes!
Peace!

Ok - another pitchy thing was actually the revival of Earth Wind & Fire at this weeks pathetic "Idol Gives Back"-farce of a show. This once fantastic band and true style-creators has been minimized to a joking shadow of them selves with Phil Bailey desperately trying to hold it all together with a falsetto long gone. Maurice White is gone and he WAS EW&F. I was EMBARRASSED when I watched it.
I know, of course, that a majority of American Idol viewers are born long after EW&F had their prime, but still.. why bring them in?
For those of you who don't know, Earth Wind & Fire is one of the most important bands in soul, funk, r & b. They were the ones that everybody back in the late 70s and early 80s looked up to as THE band. And in their AI show they were a bunch of pitchy old guys... embarrassing! I never understood why they were there to play. Ridiculous!
Maybe just me being outta line again...
Peace!

Actually, I grew up a big Earth, Wind, and Fire fan. Although, I didn't think they sounded their best the other night, I didn't think they were that bad.
I've heard alot of people complaining about how they are so disappointed with the performance of certain "oldies" type acts , Earth, Wind, and Fire, Diana Ross, and Annie Lennox, on American Idol, as if it's that important that they're on top of their game.
I don't really see what the big deal is. These people have already had their moments in the sun. They don't have anything to prove. It's not that important that they perform their best on the show. They're there because they want to be, not because they have to be. Personally, I really enjoy watching the older acts perform. I even liked Peter Noone's performance.
However, I know one thing, if they ever had Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend perform, the place would be rockin'!

Nah... I disagree a little bit... it was a SAD performance by EW&F. They should have the self-realization to stay home when they cannot deliver. They had their kicks... a long time ago, and sadly they cannot deliver anymore - in spite of Phil's frantic performance ;-) He did his best, man, it just didn't bring it through.
Despite the fact that EW&F is NOT EW&F anymore (Maurice is not in the band any more), then they had a chance but sort of blew it a little bit.
But is it ME being a lill bit pitchy now?... ;-)
Peace!
Hank
