Ok, I have a question... It has been proven time and time again reading through some posts that a lot of people are voting for people simply because of how they look... Rooting people on because they are 'hot'... I can understand people's enthusisam and excitement for their favorites, thats why we're all here talking about it anyway! :) BUT, I have a question to make you REALLY think about the talent that is on the show this year, or has already been voted off... And here it is:

Suppose American Idol was truly based on talent, and was done so by not revealing the contestants identities? Yup, you wouldnt get to SEE any of them until they were voted off or won! I guess the show could be on radio then!! haha But think about it, and just focus on the voices of the contestants. Who do you think has the best/worst vocal talent, despite looks?

I'm curious to see how the contestants would rank if looks had NOTHING to do with it...

I like the way you think. :)

I won't say who but I cannot look at one of the contestants and I close my eyes when this person sings. WHY??? Looking at this person makes me want to turn the channel.... but when I close my eyes the music is not bad. (not great.. but good)

The person has a face for radio. ;)

I'm supporting Taylor, not exactly eye candy to the younger viewers, but then I'm not a younger viewer. However, in all honesty, I go with the voice and performance alone, nothing to do with what they look like, Taylor could come out in that bunny outfit and I'd still love his vocals.

What a cool idea! Actually voting for how a person sings in a singing competition! How original!

OK, so that was thinly veiled sarcasm.........................

It is unfortunate, but this competition isn't just about singing, but about performing, and about being a pop icon. Let's face it, we Americans like our pop stars pretty.

If it were simply about singing, the top three would be Kat, Mandisa, and Elliot. They have the most talent, versatility and range. However, it isn't, and so I must again dread each of the coming weeks when I am forced to endure Kellie screech out another one, then finish up with an equally horrific, "I am as dumb as a bag of hammers" routine. Why? Because she's "pretty."

It is sad, but I am starting to enjoy hearing Ryan speak, because at least it means she isn't.

I agree with the 3 singers you picked. They are the best in my opinion as well.
And I also agree with you about Kellie. I couldn't believe that she wasn't in the bottom 3 and Katharine was??? We all have to get out votes in to make sure this doesn't happen again!

Barb, you ROCK!!! Yes, Yes, YES, let's vote, VOTE, VOTE, for the McPheever!!!!!! I was so mad last night that my man had to listen to me vent for a half hour after the show finished! Bucky and Kellie were safe, but Kat was in the bottom two? Has the rest of America been watching a different show? Is this the Apocalypse?

I think a lot of it has to do with the Producers trying to create drama and keeping us hooked on the show... I believe they know who is going home, and make it interesting for the viewers by throwing a couple favorites into the bottom three...look at what it did! It worked...it will make people vote even more, therefor tying them into the show even more! :) I dont think there is anything wrong with that, but it seems to be the only aspect of the show that is contrived...

I don't see what's so hard to believe about Katharine being in the bottom two without AI making it up.

The world is truely coming to an end. Cloie agrees with ciuma. Last year Carrie underwood was never in the bottom three. Was that because of AI judges or the votes? You either have faith in the show or you dont. If you dont, why bother watching or voting?

Perhaps people have misunderstood me...The votes definitely matter! And it is important to do so...they matter for who wins, and who gets voted off...Two extremes, the highest and the lowest, which i believe are accurate. The rest in between i believe the producers can 'play' with the figures as much as they want to create drama and keep people enthusiastic about the show and voting. Example, is by puting people in the bottom three that might not actually belong there, just to get the kind of response they got last show, which will most certainly make people vote even more. ANY kind of suspense like that draws the crowds in, and afterall, shows are geared towards ratings. Look at the 'Drama' that was created in the old Quiz Show 21 (which was turned into a movie) where the producers were enhancing the drama to keep , and grow an already huge fanbase... I just think it is entirely possible that the other 2 people in the bottom 3, along with the definite person going home, might not be vote based, but producer based solely for suspense, drama, and the encouragement for even more votes than they already get. C'mon, there is NO ONE that sees that this could be a possibility???

Votes are the ultimate "truth" of the show. A vote is a vote- and it doesn't matter that someone voted for vocal reasons or they liked the color of the contestant's shoelaces. A vote is a vote, and the ultimate determination of the contest.

I'm receptive to the idea that producers maniuplate certain situations to bolster ratings. Reality TV is famous for that. I wouldn't accuse them of tampering with votes unless I had evidence to the fact, and MagicMarkerman is making no such claims.

The seating on elimination night is very deliberate, as is the order in which contestatn's performances are discussed. I would definitely be receptive to the notion that other tricks are in play to keep the show as watched as it is.

It's sad & I don't mean to pinpoint (o.k., maybe I do) but when you have people like (Please do not attack individual members, this is flaming- SoS), who are so adamant about connecting weight & jerky dancing to vocal prowess, people like kellie will go much farther than they deserve.

Why? Because these voters seem to have gotten American Idol mixed up with America's Next Top Model.

Ciuma, You are missing the point... It is very possible that she is in the bottom 3 due to lack of votes... My point was to illustrate that it could be possible that the other bottom 2 beside the one going home could all be for the show... Katharine, with her popularity, was merely used as an example for this scenario.

Katharine, by the looks of your favorite Idol in your screen name, is in your number one spot... Are you saying you werent surprised by her being in the bottom 3?

Ciuma
04-05-2006, 06:04 PM
Okay. Well, I still am extremely doubtful of the notion that they'd tamper with the results for anything.

No, I'm not saying I wasn't surprised. I was a bit. It was really weird to see her in the bottom three, but I wasn't THAT surprised because I had been reading tons of posts about how terrible her performance was and few about how good it was. And these posts are not from producers' cohorts... they were voters' opinions. I even heard comments like, "I will never be a fan of Katharine again," after last week's performance and for once it was for her performance alone. When you take this into account, along with polls not affiliated with the show, it makes too much sense that she was in the bottom three. Of course, I might have been much more surprised if I had not bothered to see anyone else's opinion.

This tells me that America's opinion counts, and that WAS America's opinion of her from all sources outside of the show itself. Maybe not so many thought so little of her, but the fact is that they did NOT vote for her. As SoS said, a vote is a vote, and a vote or lack thereof can mean many things.

Its not like they are really tampering with anything... that would be changing the person that was voted to go home... If the person going home is the only thing that really matters, I wouldnt consider them puting on a show 'tampering'...it doesnt effect anything by them doing it other than getting people more involved.

Ciuma
04-05-2006, 06:16 PM
Right, I get you. Personally, I'd call it tampering because it's messing with the singers, voters, everything except whether they go home that week or not. It CAN affect who goes home the following week.

Hello, I guess I like Taylor, because he is different and has a unique voice. Favorite female is Kellie, she has a nice voice, and a "sparkling personality"

You think so? how? To me all of the Idols are pushing themselves every week, well except for Bucky...If they are pushed to work harder cuz they happened to be in the bottom 3 the week before, more power to them! sometimes a good swift kick in the butt will keep them on track and prevent them from slacking... I think it is a great way for the ones who think they are doing great, to keep them in 'check' and dont plateau... I dont see anything negative from the 'placement' of the other 2 n the bottom 3. Also, for the voters, it is making them vote even more to ensure there favorites will stay... By the producers doing that, if they really are (but it looks like a possibility, and it makes sence), it is keeping EVERYONE in check...contestants and voters alike.

It WOULD matter, if AI was participating in something like that! That would clearly be dishonest, a lie, to say someone was in the bottom 3 and they weren't. It even could change the minds of some less dedicated voters the next week. I believe AI is reporting honestly.
It is an entertainment show so when a popular contestant is in the bottom 3, I dont blame them for adding the extra "drama".

Going back to the original post of this thread about if it were to be talent based, I have to say, now that Elliott has found his comfort zone, He has really been shining vocally and isnt as timid. He has one of the clearest voices I have ever heard and is RARELY pitchy... I honestly believe he and Taylor share the title for the most raw talent... They also are each unique, as well as have likeable personalities.
