Did you hear about this guy? Even though I think homosexuality is wrong (the Bible calls it an abomination against God and says homosexuals will NOT inherit the kingdom of God), we are supposed to hate the sin, not the sinner:

I have heard this cliche' voiced repeatedly whenever a self proclaimed Believer comments on social Ill's that they disagreed with.
Could you please detail for me what exactly this means, and how is it accomplished?
sandy

It is not a cliche. It is the word of God.
Just like I don't hate criminal aliens. I DO hate that they are breaking our laws. I don't hate muslims. I DO hate that they are trying to destroy us. We are commanded to love each other in the Bible. If we only loved the sinless, we would love God the Father/Son/Holy Spirit and no one else.
It is accomplished by choice, by changing one's thinking. It should start in childhood.

Leviticus 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
The Second Commandment:
Mark 12:28 ...And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Sandy didn't say the Bible says to hate the sin, not the sinner. I understood she was making a statement - one that I agree with. Don't you?

"How, then, can one reconcile the verses that seem to suggest that God hates sinners, but loves them at the same time? One of the most plausible solutions is that the Bible writers are using a figure of speech called metonymy when they write that God hates sinners.
Metonymy is defined as: “A figure by which one name or noun is used instead of another, to which it stands in a certain relation” (Bullinger, 1898, p. 538). Bullinger further explains that metonymy can be “of cause,” when the person acting can be put in place of the thing that is done (p. 539). For instance, in Luke 16:29, the text says: “They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them.” In reality, they did not have “Moses” or the “prophets,” but they did have their writings. The name Moses is a metonymy that stood for his writings, since he was the cause of the writings.
In modern times, that would be like saying, “I hate Shakespeare.” Would the person who said that mean that he hated Shakespeare’s personality? No. We understand he would be saying he does not like the writings of Shakespeare, with no comment on the playwright’s personality.
If we apply that same figure of speech to the passages about God “hating sinners,” we can see that the sinner is put in place of the sin. Thus, when God says He hates “a false witness who speaks lies,” if metonymy is being used, then God hates the lies, and the one who is doing the lying (the cause) is put in place of the lies (the effect). It is interesting to see how clear this feature can be in other contexts. For instance, Proverbs 6:17 says that God hates “a lying tongue.” Does that mean that God hates a physical tongue, made of muscle and body tissue? No. It means God hates the sin that a tongue can perform. In the same context, we learn that God hates “feet that are swift in running to evil.” Again, does that mean that God hates physical feet? No. It simply means that God hates the sin that those feet can perform. It is interesting that while few, if any, would suggest that God hates physical tongues or actual feet, they would insist that God hates actual sinners and not the sin done by them.
When studying the Bible, it is very important to keep in mind that the Bible writers often used figures of speech. When we look at the idea that God hates sin, but loves sinners, the figure of speech known as metonymy clears up the confusion. Just as God does not hate physical feet or tongues, He does not hate sinners. These nouns are put in the place of the things they cause—sin."

Yet, now, when it suits your purposes you say you don't hate them.

The Bible is the Word of God.
According to man, since it wasn't written by God.
And since everyone here has agreed that man is flawed.. how do you KNOW that the Bible isn't?
And it was an assumption... that 'direct quote' is nowhere to be found in the Bible.

Lol what do you know.....I believe God created Gay people just as he created those with handicaps.......Growing up with a younger brother that is Gay I know that he was Gay when he was 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 i think you get the point....he is my brother and I love him I know he was born the way he is and this was not a choice......So how could our loving God that forgives us for our sins not accept my brother into the Kingdom of Heaven when he does pass.........

Well, you can take your chances if you want to.
However, if you are a Christian, the only true word of God is the Bible.
I might be alot of things, but one thing I'm not is a blasphemer, and I sure as heck am not going to doubt anything that is in Bible.
Yes, the people that wrote the books in the Bible were mortal men. They were men who God spoke to directly, and many died for their faith.
When I do get to Heaven, the first people I will seek out, besides Jesus, will be Paul, Moses, Noah, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The first thing I will tell them is, "Thank you".

I guess I'm honestly confused. One of you 'zealots' says that everyone that is saved is well... saved. While the other 'zealot' says that basically nobody is saved.
Classic Bible interpretation.. or is it misinterpration.
It's all about how you were brought up and what you were taught.
Wouldn't it be better if we all just behaved as we should.. instead of worrying about who we're trying to please... if anyone at all?
Just try to be a good person and do the right thing... and in the end it is going to sort itself all out... whether you ascend to Heaven... or you become sod for the Earth.
All of the fighting about who is right and who is wrong... it's ridiculous. Nobody here KNOWS... argue it all you want... but you don't KNOW. You can't know.
Whatever happened to just being a good person?????

We're all sinners but to deliberately choose an abominable sin and keep committing it is grieving the Holy Spirit. It's like spitting in His face. Constant sinning is one thing. Occasionally slipping into sin is another. Repenting and stopping doing it is the only way to show God you're serious.

I have to agree Rush. Repenting and then re-committing the same sin over and over makes one lose credibility in God's eyes. The purpose of repenting is to honestly seek forgiveness. And to show one is sincerely sorry. Not temporary conscience soothing. Committing the same sin over again is spitting in God's face. Something I would NEVER do....
I don't think on-fire-for-Jesus born-again Christians commit many sins. I know I don't. It's not in our nature. Our old nature is gone. It has been replaced with the Holy Spirit who lives inside us. We purposely try to please Him. And He lets us know when we're even thinking about doing something wrong. I thank God every day for Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior.

It's not a matter of forgiveness. You will be forgiven, if you ask for it. However, there are consequences for all sin. You will be punished. God chastises his children. If he doesn't chastise you, then you're not saved. If you're not saved, you're one of his illegitimate children, and he's not going to bother with you. That's why you see Christians go through many trials and tribulations in life, and you see alot of the unsaved go through life, and nothing bad happens to them. Another reason is because the devil isn't going to attack his own. He is going to attack the saved, because he doesn't want them to have a good life, and he wants them to turn on God, and he's very subtle about it. It's a spiritual warfare, and you have to be aware of it, or you will get sucked into the darkness.
God chastises his children because he loves them and wants them to do good. Just like I chastise my children when they do bad. It's the same thing. If I didn't discipline my children, then that means that I don't care about them.
When God tells you to stop doing these things, and then you don't, then it manifests into an early death.

There are different translations of the forgiveness number. Some say 7x70. Others say 77. I have never seen 70x70,000.
"Then Peter came up and said to him, `Lord, how often shall my brother
sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?' Jesus said to
him, `I do not say to you seven times, but 70 times 7.'
(Mt 18:21 22).
Seventy times seven is 490. But the reading 70 times 7 can
also be interpreted as 77 times. As is so often the case in Holy
Scripture, both meanings are truly intended by God.
When read as 77, it refers to all the generations of humanity
that came before Jesus, all the way back to Adam. God has given all these
generations mercy and forgiveness through His Only Son, Jesus Christ.
Since God gave Jesus to the world despite all those generations of sin, we
also ought to forgive one another.
When read as 70 times 7, it refers to that period of time
spoken of by the prophet Daniel.
`70 weeks of years are decreed concerning your people and your
holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for
iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and
prophet, and to anoint a most holy place.' (Dan 9:24).
70 weeks of years is the same as 70 times 7 because there
are 7 days in a week.
**** This time of 490 years has already begun. It will
end with the time described in the book of Revelation, the darkest days for
the human race. Since God will forgive and heal the Church (and the world)
even after those many years of sin, we also ought to forgive one another."

Yes, forgiveness is one thing, but like I said, there are still consequences for the sins we commit. God isn't like my grandpa who when he'd watch us kids, and we'd screw up, he would just tell us "That's okay." It doesn't work like that. There's consequences for living a Homosexual lifestyle, just like there are for being a drug addict, or alcoholic, or any other sinful lifestyle.

We're all sinners but to deliberately choose an abominable sin and keep committing it is grieving the Holy Spirit. It's like spitting in His face. Constant sinning is one thing. Occasionally slipping into sin is another. Repenting and stopping doing it is the only way to show God you're serious.
Anything else is a lie.
All I know is, there is only One who determines who goes to heaven and who goes elsewhere. And I'm not Him. And He does rather take offense at those who try to usurp His position.
I know, by faith, where I'll end up. And there are others I've known over the years that I know I'll see when I get there because I've seen their faith in action. But, if someone has come to salvation by faith, I don't see that they could 'sin away' their salvation. To believe that's possible assumes that either the cross was insufficient or that we're more powerful than we truly are (that we have enough within us to overpower the work of Christ on the cross).
I can guarantee you that everybody commits at least three sins a day. By either losing your temper, looking at one of Frank's pictures with lust, or cussing at the dog, etc.

Actually, in the world of the day (and the language/culture) in which it was spoken it was kind of like how kids say something like "a bajillion". It was meant to blow an extant cultural norm out of the water. IIRC, the norm of that day was to forgive 3 times. The disciple, wanting to show how "good" he was inflated the number to 7 thinking Jesus would say "Yeah, that's plenty". But he didn't. Jesus said in essence "If you think 7 times is enough, you're not even getting started Bucky!" The exact number isn't the point. The point was "It's a whole lot more than you think."

Born-again Christians have the opportunity to have the "mind of Christ." We're supposed to use it--for His good, to bring people back to Him etc...
Our goal in life should be to be like Him.

I'm confused again.
God gives us free will.
But then you say that it's your JOB to force people to listen to what you have to say about Christ and to witness to everyone, regardless of if they want to listen to you or not.
Where's the free will in that?

There is not a limited number of times God will forgive you. The point Jesus was making is that our God is a forgiving God.
There needs to be an understand that God really does see our hearts, he knows who genuinly loves him.

That's right!! It makes no difference as long as we have accepted Christ as our Savior...

There needs to be an understand that God really does see our hearts, he knows who genuinely loves him. This has to be the most genuine, heartfelt, response that has been given as to the true nature of God and his love.
The rest of you might want to take notice.

So you don't have to love God, just begrudgingly serve him and make sure that you herd the masses back to him?
I can see where that would be liberating and desirable, if we were cattle.

Honestly, Sandy, drop the I'm a Christian so I'm right attitude.
Not ALL Christians are good people.
Not ALL Christians even believe in the Bible.
Why don't you just admit that it's better to be a good person than a good Christian.
Why can't you admit that most of what you've said and spread on this site is racist and bigoted.
Just get over yourself.

That's not the point. There's more to it than singing, "Jesus Loves Me, Yes I Know." Loving him and serving him, go hand in hand.

Yes exactly most Christians I know would not Gossip.....
They would not be Racists
They would love all people even those who are hear illegally
They would not try to put fear into people based on someones belief of another religion....
They would try and help the Homeless
and that's just a start........

How can that be twisted you say that the people in New Orleans basically should be on their own.......
You Call Barack Obama all sorts of names.....because he is a Democrat same as Hillary
You have no idea about Harry Reid but yet you feel as if you do and NV should be a national nuclear waste dump
You don't like the Dixie Chicks because one of them said what was on her mind (freedom of speech)
You want to change the Constitution
You like to post "Gossip" which is a sin if your a Christian ie Anna Nicole and Brittnay
I could go on and on Sandy for the short time that you have been here your opinions are very clear.....
I think you want everyone to agree with you.......But to tell you the truth it is because of things that have occured in the past two years that my faith is even stonger than it has been before....One thing I always think about before I say any thing is WWJD.......those 4 letters say more than any of us can in an entire paper on scripture......

The people in NO should have learned self-reliance/responsibility BEFORE Katrina. Don't depend on the government for anything. Ever. Katrina just exposed NO for the huge problem it is.
Obama is a muslim plain and simple. I don't care if he's a demoncrat or a communist. (Same thing?)
I know plenty about Harry Reid. He's a fraud.
The Dixie Twits are an abomination. They should move to France. No one with a brain slams a standing president while we are at war against evil muslims. That empowers our enemies.
I don't really care what anyone thinks. Discussing these things is interesting.

Harry Reid is a very kind Man that wants the best for our Country he also never wanted to go into Iraq to begin with......same as me where is Bin Laden you know it's so funny that no one really gives us an sawer to that question they all give us reasons as to why we invaded Iraq....When did the US become the Country to decide who was evil and who was not........now I know N. Korea has weapons but we are not going there why because they have nothing that our current administration wants such as OIL!
