If I ever had the guts to take part in American Idol, I would but I think my overall appearance would have me voted off in a jiffy. I'm too fat. Have you ever seen any fat contestants in American Idol?

Ever heard of Ruben Studdard? Not only is he fat, but he won!!! Thus, proving that it's not all about the looks. There is a place for talent sometimes.
I think he may be the only one. I think Carrie won cause she is so pretty.
In the UK Idol, all the fat people get voted of rather quickly. It seems they don't have the complete 'idol' package as no-one really wants to be fat. That may be harsh but these programs are seeking people who youngsters can aspire to.

I dont think fat matters to america but i think a overszied women would have a 80% percent chance of being voted off than a man.

There is, unfortunately a double-standard. I just finished watching Making the Band 3. One of the girls was heavier then the rest by a clear margin. Most of the contestants were rail thin, some dangerously so. Anyways this girl was heavier, and was not a good dancer. However she was the best singer of the bunch. She had an amazing voice and could really sing. The reality was, and is, though, that I knew she would never make the band. She just didn't fit into the image of the group. She went a long way because it made for a good story, but she had no chance.
Clearly a double-standard exists for males and females. Although I thought the whole Scott Savol thing was America punking American Idol a bit. In fact I even used to speed dial Scott Savol and vote for him just because I thought it was ridiculous he remained on the show so long.

yes, just look at ruben. i don't think he's light as a feather. truthfully, i think it was a set up and clay was robbed of the title. anyway, if ruben could slide thru, you probably can too!

I think if you were a fat man, you'd have a chance. Unfortunately it seems like being a fat woman is not as acceptable. I think it's kind of dumb.

I think your weight should not matter. But to the majority it does. How unfair is that? It should not matter if you can truly sing I would want them to try. I don't go by how skinny of fat someone is. Thats just wrong.

Ya you do get voted off pretty quickly, I think its not fair, I mean some people have true talent and just because their "looks" aren't so great they lose their biggest dream.

Well, if you look at some of the star that made it big in tv they are fat. But lots of our younger generation seems to want the perfect body. It's not like they are dating them. We wish we were.

Lol, simple, lose weight! Well sometimes its not that easy but if you are going to go throught so much just for being famous (singer)
THEN WHY NOT?
Even if you don't make it, I mean, hey, you look skinnier!

sweetie it dont matter to me how big or small you are. I dont watch American Idol just to see who is the hottest one. i watch it for the music. And if I think you have a rockin voice, im gonna vote for you no matter what. Look at Mandesa. She isnt exactly a toothpick but she is far better than most of the ladies in the competition. Do you see her getting voted off? Hell no cuz people love her and her music and her personality. If you have what it takes, audition. thats all i gotta say about it

It does not matter if your fat or skinny. If you can sing great then you will be the next AI. You must beleive in yourself first.

I think that a heavy woman would have to extraordinary talent to not get voted off quickly. Unfortunately, people just have less tolerance for overweight women. People expect a female Idol contestant to be pretty.

Since when does being bigger then the status quo make you ugly? These women that have graced American Idol are all beautiful in their own ways - conventional or not - You can be plus size and gorgeous and guys you'd be hard pressed to find a better lover then you do in a plus size chica - I'll tell you that much.... lets stop obsessing about the way a contestant looks in a mini skirt and focus on what is coming out of his/her vocal cords... that's the challenge.

hmm.. i went back and didn't see anywhere where someone said being big makes you ugly. i don't think it does... it just means you're big.

How much do you guys think Katherine weighs? Or for that matter, Mandisa? I say 150 and 475.

Depends on what you define as big. Mandisa wasn't just big---she was obese, although she had a gorgeous face.
Like it or not our society will tolerate an overweight man more than they will tolerate an overweight woman. It may not be fair, but life rarely is.

I do. I definitely see where your coming from and it makes sense too. Some ppl on here even admitted that they probably wouldnt vote for a plus size female. Which I think is rediculous, but if they want to be shallow, who am I to stop them.

And to whoever it is that thinks Katharine is fat: GET YOUR EYES CHECKED! A gal shouldn't have to be a size 2 to win a show! Look at Kelly Clarkson. She weighs in at 157 pounds (for her height, that makes her overweight). People were going crazy talking about recent pics of her at the Bahamas - "Look at her fat thighs!" "Is she pregnant?!". So she looked a little healthy in those pics, but she's a beautiful woman, and I don't see her record sales dropping any because of it. America needs to get over the "fat" thing. It's wearing thin. (Pun intended)

I think she's a powerful singer...but not my kind of singer.
