We've only had 2 seasons of NZ Idol and in both the "Christian" element featured strongly. I'm not taking away from the talent of any of them but it's been reported in the local media that the contestants were blessed and that congregations have been urged to vote for their person, regardless of their performance.

At $1 a vote that's not something I believe any church should be doing. Surely they should be preaching fiscal responsibility. The only people who benefit are the show organisers - the winner will be decided anyway.

When we see reports that people have spent $500 on voting it breaks my heart!

WOW, that blew my mind. You can't have just church members that want to be in Idol. It has to be open to everyone. Now the charge for voting I could live with. I would only vote once. That is so unfair to NZ. Maybe somebody could talk to the networks?

yeaj but is this for real.

You see in the first Aust Idol series there was this 'rumour' going around re Guy, which wasa versus the other ';rumour' that Shannons town of Condobolin (small, country town) had hocked itself to the tune of $30,000.

Personally I don't believe either of these. I do think that those who personally knew the fellas did big votes if they could afford it.

Look at Aus Idol 2 - the teenyboppers in that one really hocked their telephone accounts - believe that was partly the reason why Casey couldn;t sell as many albums as they wished straight off because by that time parents had come down and said no more money (somehad a/cs of $300 - at age 14).

I do agree its crazy, and its the way its run of course - and I think as the series goes on there is more of the organised voting (there was the rumour - was it last year - that one of the contestants - a male - had organised on his behalf, that he'd get in)

And church is another community thing - it would be no different from a small or large town getting behind their fave.

to get people on here you might have to go to the NZ sites and 'push' a little. We have on a few here, after the first flurry'

and just to add also

Guy didn't win on top of a church vote - to quote at the Arias red carpet and media comments

Guy Sebastian got as many if not more cheers than the celebrities when he came onto the red carpet. If that's anything to go by, he's already won the competition.

He was also the musos choice - until he won, and the jealousies and 'tall poppy syndrome' came out.

New Zealand Idol is open to everyone - it's exactly the same format, rules etc as American Idol, Australian Idol and so on.

It just happens that a fairly good proportion of the finalists in each series have been christians. That's probably because many of them get heaps of singing practice, coaching and experience from singing in church each week and they are comfortable singing in front of large groups of people.

It's natural that the people who go to the same church would want to vote for someone they know but no-one can force them to vote if they don't want to.

One of the contestants in the second series is a youth pastor in my denomination but our church was never told to vote for him and I didn't because I thought someone else was better.

What is a disgrace is the lack of promotion that the winners get after the competition is over
