Yep, Idol did the old switcheroo. This was supposed to be 80's night, but now the would be idols get to torment us with EJ songs. Let's hear some recommendations from the audience. Since I thought Naima would be gone this week with all that horsing around with African dance, I'll recommend "The Bitch is Back" for her. Best thing about EJ songs is that most of them require no range so most of the candidates should be very comfortable. And please, please Pia and Thia, DON'T sing "Candle in the Wind".

Durbin should sing "Saturday Night's Allright for a Fight". That, or "Midnight Creeper".
Pia should sing "Elderberry Wine".
Thia will probably sing "Candle in the Wind" or maybe another ballad.
Casey could do "Honky Cat". Or Haley could sing that one. Another option for Casey would be "I'm Going to be a Teenage Idol".
Jacob could sing "Levon".
Paul could sing "Razor Face".
Haley could likely do okay with "Have Mercy on the Criminal". Or Jacob could KILL that one if he picks it. I could see him doing it given some of the lyrics.
Scotty should sing "Texan Love Song", but NO WAY anyone sings that on AI.
Wonder who would do "Tiny Dancer"?
But NONE of them could be the showman that Elton is. Especially in his heyday. None of them have glasses that spell out their names in flashing lights or can do handstands on the piano keyboard while singing.
Maybe Lauren could sing "The Ballad of Danny Bailey".
Paul could possibly sing "Teacher I Need You" to appeal to the cougar vote.
Scotty could also sing "Dixie Lilly".

Can't come up with a good idea for Naima though. Maybe "Love Lies Bleeding"?
I'm not too familiar with the stuff from "The Lion King" but given all her 'Africa' themes, Naima will probably do something from that.

Nah. Me and my sister were big time Elton fans back in the day. She took a while and embroidered the cover of "Madman Across the Water" on a pair of her jeans. Saw him play a concert in Honolulu when he was on tour for his "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" tour. That was quite a while ago. Kind of lost interest about the time of the whole "Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboys" album. But he does know how to work a crowd.
Was listening to a lot of EJ stuff today. I think Durbin or possibly Jacob (though I doubt he would choose it) could do well with "Madman Across the Water". Have to shorten it a LOT (song is over 5 minutes, but it's a lot of instrumental time) but I think something significant could come of this one.
Bet they sing "Tiny Dancer" during the Thursday night group sing.

I still believe that whoever sings "dont let the sun go down', and if they can do it big, will be the star of the night. That is a big song with killer long sustaining harmony back up vocals that make the song.
Someone could sing "Blue Eyes". Not challenging, but it can be a good song.

I think Pia could kill "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me". But she might avoid it given the 'sing something up tempo' bit she's been getting. But she could really hit that song.
And one other thing. If ANY of the contestants think they can pull off an EJ song from behind a piano, well, they deserve what they get (likely a flight home) for it.

I hate to admit Scott could do any EJ song justice, but I agree he could nail this one. I might even like it if he stops twitching his eyebrows up and down in that silly way.

Scotty doesn't even need to sing. He could just talk on the show and it would be entertaining. I would miss out on his great voice though. That wouldn't be good for the ratings either.

Her attitude might be; I'm gonna slay "Don't Let The Sun" this week, next week I'll do the up tempo stuff to appease the critics.
I still think "Don't Let the Sun" would be a killer choice for Pia. Here's a potential choice for Stefano if he changed it up some (and kept his eyes open while singing).

The range is limited. Stefano will pass on it if he can't crank out some high notes.
EJ really doesn't have a huge range. Maybe "Rocket Man"?
But he could rework "Nikita" and include some of his runs and make it diifferent.

And you can change just about any song and, if you know what you're doing, make it pretty cool. Case in point, I give you "The The". They made a living doing that.

I really like that song, hadn't heard it before. I would love to hear Thia sing it. That would change her image in a hurry! Frankly it would be fun if any of the contestants, especially the girls, sang it. Only exceptions, Paul and Jacob. Too creepy for gay guys or might as well be gay guys.

Listening to several songs from that album makes me believe that the would-be idols should have to pick JUST from this show. That would be a gas. Hey, there's even a song called, "I'm going to be a teenage idol."
Thought about "Teenage Idol". But that song REALLY relies on the beat and rythm (and EJ pounding the keyboard into submission). That guy talking about how hard Elton hit on the keyboard probably never saw him play that song. During that hard beat he REALLY hammers it. Elton once said he didn't have pianists hands, he had middleweight boxers hands. And he knocks the daylights out of it on this song. And yes, that is a GREAT album.
