Idol promised there would be no more theme nights. Contestants could then show us their niches. Watch Out! Next week we get Motown....again. Everyone will sing whatever they choose in some outlandish non-Motown fashion, and we will all puke in unison. If anyone sings "Papa was a rolling stone," "Superstition," "Think," or "Heard it through the grapevine," I will kick in my TV! Thia will be lost trying to soft-pedal something. Scotty will just sing the same song and call it something else. Paul will lurch all over the stage and flash his teeth. Haley and Alaina will be totally confused because the judges tell them something different every week. James will find some way to screech. The best will be an out-of-tune treatment by Stefano and something damn good from Pia who is the only person who could possibly sing Mo. Any thoughts?

If anyone forgets in the midst of the 9.5 trainwreck we witness next week, here's what an attractive white girl singing Motown should sound like. Of course, being backed up by the Funk Brothers didn't hurt. She was the bomb.
YouTube - Joan Osborne - What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted - [STEREO]
And we don't have any black girls (damn), but listen to Mary Wells who made everyone else sound like Paul McDonald.
And Scott should listen to about three hours of Barry White to prepare for his motown debut. He might be able to almost, barely sing like Barry, at least the right key. If he does, I'll give him props.
And for Stefano, lots and lots of Marvin Gaye.
And Alaina, please do "Preacher Man" and don't screw it up.
Damn, someone pay me to advise these folks.

Most of the girls will pick something slow and boring. I don't think any of them have any soul. The guys, except for maybe Jacob, will sound anything but soulful. It'll be like Pat Boone singing 'Tutti Fruitti".

Yeah, you're right, but she won't be around more than two weeks and she couldn't sing motown if someone held a gun to her head.

I am beginning to wonder where all the talent went this year. I just listened to Crystal from last year again and only Pia can come close. I thought there was many great singers but maybe we only have one. Thia has that wonderful tone also. I am reserving judgment on her. James can Rock and Jacob is erratic but has pipes. Scotty can sing country. That is it for talent this year.

There is a lot of talent this year! And, there have been many girls win the American Idol contest in previous years as well as guys. It's all about who calls in for them, not necessarily who was the best singer. Pia is great and she just may win the entire contest, but with the voting being as it is, you never know, since their way of voting is really not fair.
I like a lot of the contestants this year, both the girls and the guys. Scotty sings country songs, and that is what he does best. I'm sure he'll get a contract even though he will more than likely not be this year's idol. Casey is good, but in a different way that many won't like. James is good with the type of music he does and very good if you consider the disease he has to deal with and doesn't use it as a crutch.
That's just it, there are so many people who really have their own music and will not do well with some of the themes given, but they'll do their best at whatever they are asked to do.
Once it's down to the top 10, then we'll have a great contest going on....
Some of you sound so down on the show..... What don't you like about it? The new judges? Or, just the way all of the judges have been from the start of the show? And, if you don't like it so much, why do you watch it; just so that you can get on line and critize they people who have worked their way up to the top 13?
I also think the blonde who is 16 or 17 years old, I can't think of her name right now, may have a chance at being the idol this year. I'd say my top 3 guesses would be Pia, Casey and/or the blonde 16 or 17 year old. Do any of you sing for fun or for a living? Or, do any of you come from a music background?
Does anyone remember when the Allen guy won, the year when Adam should have taken it hands down? That all had to do with Allen getting a lot more phone calls or texts....so many more that it was hard to believe.... Everyone can vote as many times as they want during the two hour period. I think that rule should be changed to. One vote per person....That's the only way to make it fair.
Regarding the Black Eyed Peas... I think they were horrible... I know, some of you may have enjoyed their show. They told the world they were singing this for the people in Japan. How could they do that? They are so different than what the people in Japan even stand for. I'm surprised Japan hasn't came back with a remark about them.... I'm assumming the judges on the show have a lot to do with who the entertainers are who come on.... The last two years, their choices have been pitiful, when there are a lot more fantastic, entertainers out there without being provacative, and who can really sing are out there....
It was great to hear what you all think. I'm looking forward to the next show to see what happens....
I'm really surprised this thread will allow some people to post a picture of oneself flipping a bird! They have so many other rules to go by........

Scotty doesn't know! Scotty doesn't know! Scotty doesn't know!
Scotty doesn't know that he sucks so bad!
So, don't tell Scotty!
Casey is good, but in a different way that many won't like.
If Casey was clean cut, and didn't have that goofy looking beard, I doubt that anyone would pay any attention to him. The fact that he's weird looking is what makes him stand out.
Some of you sound so down on the show..... What don't you like about it? The new judges? Or, just the way all of the judges have been from the start of the show? And, if you don't like it so much, why do you watch it; just so that you can get on line and critize they people who have worked their way up to the top 13?
My wife loves the show, much more than I do, but I watch it with her, anyway. I like the competition aspect of the show. It's kinda like sports, in a way. Each week is like a playoff round, until you eventually get to the Superbowl of American Idol. Plus, once in a while, there's someone that you look forward to seeing each week. Last year, for me, it was Crystal. This year, I haven't really gotten too excited about any of them. However, I think Pia is the most talented, and the best looking.
I also think the blonde who is 16 or 17 years old, I can't think of her name right now, may have a chance at being the idol this year.
Her name is Lauren, and I think she's pretty average. Nothing to write home about. Plus, she's kinda fat, and acts kinda dumb. She's like a fat Kelly Pickler
Do any of you sing for fun or for a living? Or, do any of you come from a music background?
I play the triangle, does that count? I want to join the glee club, 'cause I'm just filled with glee, can't you tell?
Does anyone remember when the Allen guy won, the year when Adam should have taken it hands down? That all had to do with Allen getting a lot more phone calls or texts.
Adam Lambert lost because he's a flaming homosexual. It had nothing to do with talent. Personally, I liked Allison Iraheta, but I don't know if she's done anything since then. I haven't kept up.
Regarding the Black Eyed Peas... I think they were horrible... I know, some of you may have enjoyed their show. They told the world they were singing this for the people in Japan. How could they do that? They are so different than what the people in Japan even stand for. I'm surprised Japan hasn't came back with a remark about them.
I doubt if the people in Japan are the least bit worried about anything that has to do with American Idol right now. Just a hunch, but I think they're a little preoccupied.
I'm assumming the judges on the show have a lot to do with who the entertainers are who come on.... The last two years, their choices have been pitiful, when there are a lot more fantastic, entertainers out there without being provacative, and who can really sing are out there....
I don't think the judges have anything to do with who the musical guests are. I'm sure it's the producers, and whoever else is running the show. It all has to do with demographics, and who the target audience is. Plus, they have to have some of the previous contestants on the show. Even the sucky ones like Lee Dewyze. Their choices have been real suck lately. That's why I have a DVR, so I can fast-forward through all that crap.
I'm really surprised this thread will allow some people to post a picture of oneself flipping a bird! They have so many other rules to go by........
Well, considering he's only one of about four people, who actually post on here, regularly, I doubt if it really matters.

First, my avatar is of a living legend on Idol, Antonella Barba. It represents her opinion of being voted off the show and mine of most of the contestants. Here's a sample of her in action. Notice that she is drop-dead gorgeous and can't sing a lick. I especially like the fangs.
YouTube - Antonella Barba- Out For Blood
Second, being critical is very important because almost all the singers are mediocre to wretched and yet are hyped to the stars by the idiot judges and the fantards. I have found it necessary to be really nasty sometimes to offset any dangerous adoration I come across.
Third, as the most vicious critic on this site (Teddy about 3 lengths behind), I watch the show for a number of reasons: 1) I am sadly addicted to it. It'slike heroin or staring at a horrible car crash. 2) I like to banter with these charming folks and other less charming ones on other shows, always trying to ram reality down their throats. 3) Once in awhile I come across someone really good, and one of them even won--Carrie Underwood, Alison Iraheta, Crystal Bowersox, Daughtry. 4) Much like the closet optimist who says to himself "There must be a pony in this horseshit somewhere", I keep thinking I'll come across something really special or at least someone who improves during the season. It's kind of like watching a terrible movie to the end, thinking it has to get better sometime.

Chopper, I assume you hold to Barba's "can't sing a lick" comment, but I thought Barba sang well on that youtube song . A commercially sound product actually. No, she's no Pia, but I didn't hear any off notes. And she didn't sing that well on the AI show but 'out for blood' was acceptable to me. What are you hearing in that vocal performance that's bothersome?

I find her voice shrill, and she never gets "over" the top of the notes, always a little flat. Also this song is drab the way she sings it. I remember that from the show. But you may be right that she's improved in the last few years. And I still love the fangs!

I was very pleased this evening. It was the first night, I didn't want to slit my wrists listening to these folks. I admit that I laughed over Scott's pretend version of the song, Stefano's "what the Hell am I doing up here," Naima's "Oh well, might as well throw in a stupid African dance, and Haley's "Let me just throw in everything I can think of to save my sizable ass." But the others all showed me some (gasp) growth. It was the first time I liked Jacob who throttled back all that winging around stuff he does and Paul (Oh no, Mr. Bill) who fit the song perfectly to his style. Of course, I still hate all of Jacob's girly gestures and can't stand the tone of Paul's voice, but... My favorites were Lauren, and Pia who were both very professional, and James who was very clever. I disagree with Lance because I think Pia is waiting to deliver the up-tempo stuff when she really needs it. Pia showed virtuosity that none of these others has. James really sailed in a genre that doesn't fit his voice. My bottom: Haley, Stefano, Naima, and Casey. Bottom three from the voters: Haley, Naima, Stefano, but anything could happen.
Teddy G
03-24-2011, 06:28 AM
Stefano was the worst performance, along with worst song choice. Out of all the great Motown songs, why the hell would you pick that one?
The best part of the show was when they tried to give Gordon Ramsay some home-made dish, made by Stefano's mom, and he just looked at it like, "What the hell is this slop?"
Agree that Stefano was the worst of the night. Kind of a WTH performance. The melody did NOT go along with the lyrics. Like he was singing the lyrics of one song to the tune of another. Almost as incongruous was Naima. A great Motown tune, an American 'dance anthem' that seemed to abruptly stop and switch into some disjointed African dance. Neither were horrid, but it was like having whipped cream and pork chops. And to round out my bottom three I'd throw Haley in there as well. I think she sang okay, but given how she's been in the bottom of late, it may have been too little too late.
And I agree that Pia is going to have to pump it up a notch to hang around longer.

My bottom three is ..... it doesn't matter, so long Haley. However, replaying her performance, she did pretty darn good. The girl can sing, and in pitch also.
I'd personally prefer Casey or Thia to go. Thia's beauty is keeping her around, but she does have a nice vocal, but a little soft and range limited.
Naimi shouldn't last too long.
If I were Lauren or Scotty, I would bow out tonight. The final ten are committed to tour for Idol one year. Country music is likely gonna be there thing.
They've both have been been seen via the AI shows, They've proven they can sing and perform. There is someone out there who would invest in them and they can get a start on their careers.

Re Pia; It really doesn't matter, X1, even if she were to leave tonight. She is a rare diamond, a rare find. She's got deals/offers waiting, win or loose. I can already hear her vocal theme throughout the film in big motion picture block buster(s). She might just kill in many of the childrens animated series, if that's her choice. She's gonna do great things. Her demeanor is also top notch.

I'm certain that the producers made sure the judges plugged the people desired for the tour. The most obvious was Jacob. Gush all over him and then send a flock of women up on stage. Notice that when a guy tried to go on stage, Ryan practically shoved him off. Bummer for Jacob. That was probably the only person he wanted to hug.

True, she won't have to go back home and wait tables or anything. I was just referring to whether or not she wins the whole thing. She does need to show another facet. But that's her choice. Does she want to be singing theme songs or singing in front of full concert halls. If she can sing songs other than ballads (and she can if she chooses to) she can win the whole thing.

Scotty and Paul were the best singers of the night. I really enjoy listening to them sing every week.

Haha.....I was thinking the same thing. The neglected guy looked somewhat disappointed too. I wonder if "certain" groups will complain about Ryan's decision to stop at the guy who wanted to hug Lusk? Wouldn't surprise me.
Lusk's effeminate actions, especially while he performs, gives me the creeps. He'll likely pull an Aiken. That is, not disclosing certain facts until he gets his contracts and moolah.

I wasn't belittling your critique, I promise. I actually agree with you and Teddy. I was just saying she has been noticed by the producing powers that be, right smack in Music Central, so to speak, and I greatly doubt they'll let her get away.

That's why we have so many different music styles and genres. What may not appeal to some, appeals to others.

Didn't think you were. Just agreeing that her talent can take her as far as she wants to go. Only question is, how far is that? Some get into the competition and don't want or expect to win. They only want some publicity without having the burden of the AI contract to carry forward. Like Chris Sligh perhaps. Some just want to go home because once they're exposed to the intense media pressure decide that they really don't want to live that life after all. Like Jason Castro. But I think we agree that if she really wants to win it, she has the talent to do just that. I think she and James are the two most consistent performers this season. And I think her vocals are far better of the two. But James seems to connect with the audience better at this point. If she makes the audience connection, she can toast anyone in the contest this season.

If you listen to Team PiaToscano on youtube she is not really a ballad singer but more of a pop-urban singer by nature. She sings Ballads also but a lot of it is pop-urban.

There's too much stress on "connecting with the audience". I though Casey was well received by the audience and look what happened to him last week. You just have to make them like you. That's the main reason the last three no-talent wonders won. Last year, I kept reading (in other forums) that Lee was a "nice guy". Who could tell since he never spoke in full sentences or expressed any emotions, but that's the main reason I think he won. Pia won't win because she's a girl, but she'll stick around as long as she doesn't piss off the voters. Also I agree with Lance about Pia's genre. Listen to what Katherine McPhee has done since she finished second--mostly pop-urban and light rock.
