"motown" was a gold mine to pick a great song and rock the house with it. overall the song choices were pretty lame

We should keep in mind that "motown night" doesn't mean anything by motown. It means anything on this list that we've bought the legal rights to and that the band will play and that we want you to sing.

True, I can't remember the song but last season David Archuleta's father caused an uproar when he had David sing a song that AI had to spend extra cash for the rights to.

We should keep in mind that "motown night" doesn't mean anything by motown. It means anything on this list that we've bought the legal rights to and that the band will play and that we want you to sing.
We know they have the rights to I heard It through The Grapevine as well as Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay because both of these songs have been done before and they are both powerful songs....

Those rights are usually for a certain performance, so each performance would need a new agreement. I suppose prices could change or different record companies could be involved.

I don't quite remember which song ARchi was singing that night, but I do remember what he did... He was singing an old ballad, but he added to the song a little bit of the lyrics of "Beautiful Girls" of Sean Kingston, and that was the scandal...
