View Full Version : Why get so worked up?

Yes, it's that time again... time to remind everyone that...
IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER WHO WINS (except maybe if Elliott wins)!
Generally speaking, this is the most talented group (as a whole) ever on American Idol. When all is said and done, you will be able to go to Tower Records, Musicland, Target, or wherever it is you buy your CD's, and get your favorite Idol's CD. So why get so worked up over who actually wins?
There are so many factors involved in America's voting habits that there is no way that this is truly a talent competition, or even a "whole package" competition.
This is why I actually don't vote either. I love the show for its entertainment value, and its role as a medium for me to be introduced to new artists, some of whom I like, some of whom I don't. My favorite Idol this season is Chris, but I also really like Kat, Taylor, and Elliott. I don't really care if Kellie or Paris wins. I will still be able to find music by those I do like. I also don't really care what the heck anyone else thinks about the Idols I do like. In the end... it just doesn't matter folks.

Actually, let me take an honest stab at why some people get so worked up by who stays and who goes. It is really not unlike the ties some people have to professional sports teams. For instance I live and die with the fortunes of the Green Bay Packers. However, you have to be able to make a distinction between what is going on in your life and what goes on between the hash marks on a football field. Rarely does one impact the other.
Like you, when it comes to Amercian Idol, I watch it strictly for entertainment value. I don't vote because I really don't care who wins. My life isn't going to change and America isn't going to be a better or worse place simply because one contestant beats out another. But I think some people, those whom I'm guessing are looking to fill a void in their lives, suddenly stop being able to make a distinction between where their lives end and the contestant's begins. Therefore every slight of their fav contestant, perceived or otherwise, suddenly becomes a slight at them and takes on larger than life proportions.
If I am totally invested in a particular candidate and that candidate loses, then I too must be a loser and must desperately begin searching for reasons (the contest is fixed, the voters are idiots, etc. etc.) why my contestant didn't really lose---they were robbed! Conversely, if my guy wins, then it validates my own sense of self-worth because, obviously, I had the good sense and wisdom to know which candidate to back all along.
For the most part this obessision with the contestants is harmless enough, until it reaches the point where someone says they will not be able function if their guy loses. Theose viewers who actually become depressed if the "wrong contestant" wins. In my estimation those are the people who are in serious need of finding a new hobby.

hey now...i am not obsessed (okay maybe a little) with Chris, and I get worked up because I'm a FAN taken from the word Fanatic. I think he deserves the title. I know he'll be great no matter what, he actually might do better if he doesn't have the AI title. I don't know, but as a fan, just like I am of those KC Chiefs and MU Tigers...I will live, breath, and sleep Chris!!

We have now become on a football level........
Mortal opponents. I have been a fan of the Chicago Bears since 1962. I have to say as a Bears fan, I was pleased to hear that #4 is coming back.

You sir are as bad as my brother-in-law (who lives about 20 miles south of you in Racine). He is a Bears fan as well, the bad sheep of the family surrounded by a sea of devoted cheeseheads.
You must be the most popular man in West Allis on Sunday afternoons---not. I shall try to forgive you, obviously some unexplained traumatic incident in your youth turned you to the dark side.
