Just got finished tivo-ing the program and it was pretty much what you would expect from an hour filled with love songs---boring.
Before I begin my disection, I wonder if those people who constantly complain about the "less than best" singers being so popular picked up on what both Andrea Bocelli and David Foster said during two different parts of the program----charisma and likability is a huge part of star power---which is exactly why someone as talented as Elliot Yamin has no chance of winning this thing.
Katherine: No matter how good a singer someone may be, tackling any song done by Whitney Houston or Celine Dion is just dumb, dumb, dumb. No matter how well you sing it, it will pale in comparison to the original. The judge's were right on target with their criticism, Houton's "I Have Nothing" was way too big for her and by trying to sing it "angrily" McPhee only made it worse. And if at this point in the competition you're going to start bawling just because the judges tell it to you straight, you probably deserve to be voted off. She's probably safe though, but won't be helped by a mediocre performance in the "slot of death" i.e. going first. Grade: C+
Elliott: He brought the house down with "Song for You" but shame on American Idol for pretending as though Donny Hathaway was responsible for what many critics consider a love song masterpiece just because that's the version Elliot listened to growing up. "Song for You" was written in 1970 by rock legend Leon Russell and although Hathaway's cover of the song is well known, several other artists have covered it just as well, if not better, than Hathaway including Ray Charles, the Carpenters, Willie Nelson and more recently Christine Aguilera. Elliot's rendition was okay, but I was not nearly as enamored with his performance as the judges were. Grade B-
Kellie: She performed better than last week, but that isn't saying a whole lot. She may finally be walking the plank (the Pickler Plank?) but there is absolutely no denying her likability. The comment that she needs "someone to play pottery with" was pretty funny. Being the only remaining country singer in the group certainly won't hurt her chances, and the Jimmy Nuetron harido only made her look that much more beautiful. But she is definitely on life support at this point. Grade D+
Paris: The judges pooh-poohed it but I thought Paris hit the night's homerun with a flawless performance of Marvin Hamlisch's and Marilyn and Alan Bergman's "The Way We Were". And she looked as beautfiul as she sounded. Without question she is the most technically proficient singer remaining, but I just don't know if that will be enough to save her. Grade A
Taylor: When Taylor isn't running around dancing as if one of the stagehands had just given him a hot foot, he really doesn't bring much to the table. His rendition of "Just Once" was mediocre, at best, and more and more he is coming across as a "one trick pony". At this point I am not even sure he will outlast Elliott. Grade C
Chris: Poor Chris must be wondering which producer he pissed off so badly to keep getting stuck in these awful theme nights that do nothing to showcase his talent. He made the best of bad situation though and should climb back out of the bottom three. Grade B+
Going to be very interesting to see who gets sent back to East Bumbletuck tonite.

My view on last night:
Elliot - sounded the best of course and it's about time people actually realized this. I don't think he has enough fans to win, but I hope he goes far in his career.
Katharine - she sounded alright and looked good, but will she ever blow me away, not likely because she doesn't have a powerful voice to do that. She can't really sing any Whitney or Mariah because her voice is not that strong. She only sounds good singing the type of songs they sung last week.
Chris - compared to vocals, Elliot sounded better than Chris, but Chris's style is so much better than everyone elses. I think he has the ability to connect with us better than anyone else and that's why he should win.
Paris - Overall, she gave a good performance. I think she was trying a little bit to over sing the song, but she did good. She could've sung the Whitney song that Katharine was singing because Katharine may have better control of her voice, but Paris has a better range than Katharine.
Taylor - I don't care what no one says, Taylor was not right for this competition. They should've listened to Simon when he didn't like Taylor. I'm not feeling Taylor at all. When he's not dancing, the performance is so boring, there's a way of just singing a song and people can connect with you, but Taylor doesn't connect with the audience unless he's dancing.
Kellie - Please get rid of Kellie already, she is killing me. She is another that should not have been picked. For weeks now, she has been the weakest person. She's practically been weak this whole competition. I still think they are way too nice to her like everything has to do with song choice, she can't sing anything unless it's country, so what does that tell you.
Bottom line, Kellie really has to go, hell she should've been the first one gone, but votefortheworst.com will strike again and she will end up being safe and someone else who deserves to be there will go home.

That reminds me of last year when Seacrest introduced somebody singing, "Bridge Over Troubled Water", by Michael W. Smith. I was like, Michael W. Who? Michael W. Smith might have covered it, but that's a Simon & Garfunkel song.

Michael W. Smith is an AWESOME contemp. Christian singer. He's great, really. I sing 2 of his songs in church as solos. He's got great range and versatility.

I agree. The judges act like certain songs are too sacred to be sang by contestants. Like they're not worthy or something.

I'm sure he is, but that's not the point.

I agree, Rush. If they don't think the contestants are worthy to sing certain songs, then why give them the option? So that they have someone/something to bash?

Yes. She. Did. No. Matter. How. Many. Periods. You. Put. In. Your. Sentence.
Doesn't mean she isn't a good contestant but last night she and the song she attempted were in different leagues.

Don't know what's up your BUTT lately, False. You're more spiteful than usual. Read "Gender/Age"... it may make you feel better. And check your PM's. :(

Nothing's up my butt. Katherine's performance last night was sub-par. I can understand when the likes of Gracie, McFeverish or Froggiegirl can't tell the difference, they are generally clueless. But you are smart enough to know better.
Was McPhee's a "pickler-esque" performance last night? Of course not, not even close. But it definitely it was not one of her better efforts, and may have in fact been her worst to date.

I'm not the who is unable to make room for alternate opinions here. You can't even acknowledge the POSSIBILITY her performance was sub-par despite unanimous feedback from the judges that it was.

Everyone has an opinion, and that's cool. But YOU must respect the idea that not everyone agrees with YOU.

Hey FI, thanks for the shout out! I don't have to repeat myself in this thread.
FI, just wondering but, who is your favorite contestant?
Also, would you possibly know what Ace's real name is? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
(Paris DOES look like Gary Coleman! I could not even look at her last night, or I would lose it!!!)

Everytime I see Paris bobble her head, I crack up. I picture her in someone's back glass, going down the interstate, just bobbling along.

Bwah, I miss my sweetie Ace. LOL! (I think his first name is Norbert).
I honestly don't think I have a favorite at the point, but I think Kat and Chris are the front runners. I adore Kellie but would be the first to admit she doesn't have the 1/2 the talent of those two. If she survives someone has GOT to help her with song selection.
Elliott can sing, but looks like he is participating in a talent contest at the local Eagles club. Taylor is an interesting contestant and should make the top three but his voice and mannerism gets tiring after a bit. Paris is a woman in a girls body---but it's only a matter of time before she gets sent packing.
By the way, I do enjoy your posts, and they seem among the more reasoned ones. Is Absent Element your significant other? Your posts are definitely in his league.

I don't think American Idol pretended that Donny Hathaway was the original artist to do Song for You. Most people don't know who wrote some of the biggest and most popular songs out there. Who would know that This Masquerade was written by Leon Russell. Most would assume George Benson did it, wouldn't you agree. But that's not being dishonest. Benson was just one of the most popular artists to make it. And yes, Ray Charles recorded it but I just downloaded Donny Hathaway's version of Song for You and it gave me chills.
