This Smashing Pumpkins were formed in Chicago in 1988 and the members include Billy Corgan, James Iha, Darcy Wretzky, and Jimmy Chamberlin.
They released their first album, “Gish” in May of 1991 but it wasn’t until their second one came out that they finally broke into the stream of musicians. The album titled, “Siamese Dream’” sold 18.3 million in the United States in 2006 making them one of the most successful bands of the 90’s. They had great success until fighting, drug use, and withdrawing sales led to their break up in 2000. D’Arcy was arrested in January of 2000 for allegedly buying two bags of cocaine. She completed a court ordered drug program and the charges were dropped. Corgan took out a full-page ad in the Chicago Tribune and announced the band was going to reunite. This made the fans ecstatic.
They announced in 2006, they were going to try to reunite and make a new album. They had original members Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin and new members Jeff Schroeder, Ginger Reyes, and Lisa Harriton. At this time, they started to tour and promote the newest release of Zeitgeist.
Everyone says that Billy does not need anyone except Jimmy to make an album. He writes their music from his relationship with his family and friends and the band members. They are full of emotions and a strong influence from others.
They have made some of the music with more guitar tracks during the recordings trying to make a newer sound because many have said the sound they have is like sophomoric poetry. They will be going from quiet songs to loud as many bands do.
Besides their albums, the Smashing Pumpkins are known for some of the most striking and memorable video clips. The approach with their videos is a completely inventive point of view rather than sheer commercials to sell albums. They did not want to do videos of just a lot of people jumping around so they hired some very famous directors including Kevin Kerslake, Samuel Bayer and Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.
The Smashing Pumpkins have been nominated for several MTV Video Music Awards and you are sure to see more of them in the coming years.
