Silverchair Biography

Daniel Johns and Ben Gillies put this band together while they were in primary school in 1992. They first were called “Innocent Criminals”. They went on to attend Newcastle High School and friends Chris Joannou and Tobin Finnane joined the band.

They started performing at local establishments when they noticed a competition for local area school bands. They decided to enter the competition; however, they did not win. Finally, in 1994, they were recognized when they won a national demo competition called Pick Me with their song, “Tomorrow”. The prize for winning was Triple J recording studio would record the song while BBS would film the video.

In 1994, they changed their name to Silverchair. Their popularity grew and they soon had a three album record deal with Sony Music. The single recorded by Triple J spent six weeks at #1 on the Australian charts. They redid “Tomorrow” along with a video and this made it to the US market, which became the most played song of the year on modern rock radio stations. Their career was off and running.

Through the next few years they released, “Frogstomp” in 1995, “Freak Show” in 1997, “Neon Ballroom’ in 1997, “Diorama” in 2001, and “Young Modern” in 2007.

The band has had the privilege to perform with many bands including Blink-182, Red Hot Chili Peppers and they have performed in many charitable events including, Live Aid and Wave Aid.

In June of 2007 members of the band announced that they would be touring with Powderfinger in a must see event for Australian rock fans. The tour named, Across The Great Divide Tour was through two countries. Following this tour, they went on to North America. This was the first full tour in this area since 1999. This ran through July and August of 2007. Sold out shows were New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto in minutes of opening ticket sales. They also performed at Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago on August 4 with Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

This Australian Rock band has had more than twenty hits in the last decade. This is more then any other artist on the Australian charts. Keep your eyes on this band, there is much more to come!
