Pink Floyd rose in a period of time when the music scene was dominated by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Sun Ra, and William S. Burroughs. Formed during 1965 in Cambridge, England, the band performed under different names such as Sigma 6, The Meggadeaths, and The Abdabs before becoming Pink Floyd, named after legendary blues men Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.
Since their early days the band featured a distinctive sound, blending psychedelic rock, progressive rock and early experimental space rock that along with philosophical and incisive lyrics, would make the band one of rock music's most successful acts in history with over 200 million albums sold worldwide.
Through their own history, Pink Floyd has experienced seven different lineups, however, members David Gilmour, Roger Water, Nick Mason and Richard Wright are the most renowned and regulars when it comes to recalling the evolution of the band.
The band enjoyed moderate success performing in venues associated with the underground movement such as the Marquee Club, the Roundhouse, and the UFO club where they turned into a favorite as a space rock band.
In 1967, EMI signed Pink Floyd and released a debut single, which songs broke into the UK Top-Ten chart. Later that year, the band's debut album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" achieved such success that it is considered the greatest British psychedelic album ever after The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's.
However, their breakthrough into the mainstreams occurred during the 1970’s, the decade in which Pink Floyd was mostly known by recording amazing concept albums that were leaving behind their psychedelic era to evolve into a music genre that has been always hard to classify for both diversity and originality.
Between 1967 and 1994, Pink Floyd recorded 14 studio albums, from which "The Wall", released in November 1979, would become their biggest hit worldwide, number 3 in the UK charts, and number one on the Billboard Top Ten chart for 15 weeks.
"The Wall" received a RIAA certifications as 23x Platinum (Diamond) album, that incidentally became symbolic after the Berlin Wall come down in November 1989 with Pink Floyd performing live in concert at that site in Germany.
