Metallica Biography

Heavy metal band Metallica was formed in October 1981 in Los Angeles, California, and the casual dressing style and attitude of their members have gained a loyal fanbase.

Metallica was heavily influences by British heavy metal and hard rock bands such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rush, Saxon, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, and Queen among others. Even the band's name was suggested after his promoter, Ron Quintana, tried this for his US & UK Metal Bands magazine.

Playing also with speed metal and thrash metal, Metallica's debut album "Kill 'Em All" was released in 1983 and went triple platinum after selling 3 million copies. From that date until 1986, the band toured extensively throughout the country and released two more albums, "Ride the Lightning", a RIAA 5xPlatinum, and "Master of Puppets" a 6xPlatinum album that marked the band's true climb to fame.

Between 1983 and 2003, Metallica recorded eight full-length studio albums and has already announced the release of a new production sometime in 2008.

Although tragedy stroke Metallica during their European tour, in which bassist Cliff Burton was killed in a bus crash in 1986, the band returned to stage performing all over the world with great success.

Metallica was also involved in a copyright infringement debate after their music was available for free download through Napster, a popular file-sharing service that eventually had to be closed and reinvented due to a number of legal concerns.

The band's lineup includes musicians James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo, and Lars Ulrich. Other former members included Lloyd Grant, Cliff Burton, Ron McGovney, Jason Newsted, and Dave Mustaine.

The band has also won seven Grammy Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, two American Music Awards, three Billboard Music Awards, and two bammies. Kerrang awarded Metallica with the Hall of Fame 2003! Award and they also won the 2004 Governor's Award.

Metallica has sold over 90 million albums worldwide and was listed among the "20 Greatest Metal Bands" and MTV "Greatest Heavy Metal Band in History" by VH1 and MTV respectively, being eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
