Maroon 5 Biography Four of the members who went to junior high school together in Los Angeles started maroon 5. Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael met Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick and they formed the band Kara's Flowers. The band received a record contract while still in high school and released their only album, "The Fourth World in 1997". The album was a failure and they left Reprise Records. The boys all attended different colleges and each discovered new musical styles. They remained in touch and in 2001; they started to play together once again. Jesse went from guitar to keyboard so they had to hire someone for the guitar and they found James Valentine. When he joined, the band changed their name to Maroon and had to add 5 to it after a conflict with the name. They went on to play many clubs around New York. The band signed with Octone Records and an artist deal with Clive Davis. At about the same they also signed a publishing deal with BMG Music Publishing. They recorded "Songs about Jane" in 2003. The single off it was "Harder to Breathe" This song started to pick up airtime which made sales of the album go up. The album went to the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and the single went to the Top 20 of the Top 100. After the albums release they started touring with Michelle Branch, Nikka Costa, and Vanessa Carlton. In the summer of 2003, they toured with Graham Colton, John Mayer, and Counting Crows.
