George Harvey Strait was born on May 18, 1952 in Poteet, Texas. He has been crowned the King of Country by many.
George Strait has been nominated for more awards from the Country Music Association than any other singer and he has the record for the most #1 spots on Billboard Country Music Charts than anyone else in the industry. His albums have gone platinum and gold so many times he has almost beat out Elvis, but not yet!
Straight out of high school, he went into college, which did not hold his attention long so he dropped out and married his high school sweetheart, Norma. Then in 1971, he enlisted in the army and while stationed in Hawaii he performed in a band called "Santee". In 1972, George and Norma had their first daughter, Jenifer. He was honorably discharged in 1975 and returned to college graduating in 1979 with a degree in agriculture.
While he was in college, he formed his band "Ace in the Hole Band". They played around different honky tonks and bars, which brought them a fair following but nothing huge until George met Erv Woolsey. He ran one of the bars they played in and he used to work for MCA Records. He contacted some of his music row connections and asked them to listen to George and his band. They were impressed and quickly signed them to a deal. The "Ace in the Hole Band" is still his band to this day.
George Strait has proven in over 25 years of recording he is the King of Country with over 54 #1 songs and 42 of Billboards #1's have been his which set a record of two more than Conway Twitty. He has held many different awards but the most important ones are his children and family.
In 1981, George Strait Junior was born; everyone called him, "Bubba'. Their daughter Jenifer was killed in a car accident in 1986 and they now have a Foundation, The Jenifer Lynn Strait foundation, and all donations help charities for children around San Antonio, Texas area.
Bubba graduated from Texas A & M University and has gone into a career as a PRCA team-roping competitor.
