Foo Fighters Biography

Foo Fighters were formed by Dave Grohl in 1995 and was named after the World War ll term ‘foo fighter’, referring to mysterious aerial phenomena.

Dave Grohl was a drummer for Nirvana for four years. During this time, he had written a huge collection of songs in which he kept for himself and the band never knew existed.

It was 6 months after Kurt Coban’s death that Grohl entered the studio of Robert Lang, played every instrument, and sang every vocal on the tracks. He had his demo professionally mixed and in the end, this became the Foo Fighter’s self-titled album. He did not want the Foo Fighter’s to be a one-man studio project so he went on to find members to form his band. He found Krist Novoselic, Nate Mendel, William Goldsmith, and Pat Smear. They had their first major tour in the spring of 1995 opening for Mike Watt.

They toured through 1996 and then went back into the studio to record their second album. Due to a conflict, Goldsmith left the band. They re-did the album with Grohl on drums and released “The Colour and the Shape” on May 20, 1997.

They were the first band to perform on the David Letterman show after his heart bypass surgery in 2000. He announced them as, ‘My favorite band, playing my favorite song” which happened to be “Everlong”.

In 2006, they performed their largest non-festival concert to date at Hyde Park in London. They had many stars joining the line up such as Juliette and the Licks, Angels and Airwaves, Queens of the Stone Age, and Motorhead. Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen surprised the group and joined them for a jam session on stage that day as well.

They have performed in many arenas since that time and have grown very famous for their musical talents. They have gone on to produce four more albums titled: There is Nothing left to Lose in 1999, One by One in 2002, In Your honor in 2005, and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace in 2007.

The band performed at Live Earth at Wembley Stadium in London, England in 2007, and then went on to do V Festival later that summer.
