David Bowie Biography

Born David Robert Jones on January 8, 1947 in Brixton, England, David Bowie is a multi-face artist that has broken into singing, songwriting, arranging, producing, acting, and directing, among other activities related to both music and the film industry.

Although, his identity as musician was often confused with the British Glam rock that arose as post-hippie movement in the early 1970’s, David Bowie was basically an innovator that reinvented himself with every new musical release and stage appearance, earning the cliché that coined him as a true chameleon.

Through too many fashions and too many musical trends, David Bowie was first known when his "Space Oddity", a space-age melodrama, peaked within the UK's Top-Five singles chart in late 1969.

Taking advantage of the increasing Glam-rock movement and the fame of singers like Gary Glitter and his band, David Bowie designed an androgynous and flamboyant alter-ego to release his 1972 album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars", simply shortened to Ziggy Stardust.

From then on, David Bowie was expected to offer innovation and reinvention album after album throughout several previous albums before the releasing of "Diamond Dogs" in 1974 that brought Bowie international recognition.

In 1975, the album "Young Americans" peaked the top ten charts of numerous countries with the title single receiving airplay on all radio stations all over the world, followed by other top hit singles such as "Knock on Wood" and "Fame".

David Bowie has released 28 full-length albums. He also won a Grammy Award in 1984 for Best Video, The BRIT Award as the Best British Male Solo Artist that same year, as well as two awards for his Outstanding Contribution To Music from the BRIT Awards in 1996 and the Webby Awards in 2007.

As an actor, his first major film role was on "The Man Who Fell to Earth" (1976), but he has acted in many other movies from which one of the most commercially successful was Jim Henson's "Labyrinth", a dark fantasy, cult classic filmed in 1986. Nowadays, David Bowie remains active displaying the facets of the so-called rock chameleon.
